Emerging Folk – Eddy Lee Ryder, Donovan Woods, Olive Klug, Axel Flóvent

Eddy Lee Ryder drops her trademark hook on her new single Bad Decisions.  “Bring me weed, bad decisions, and wine.  Don’t say you love me if you’re here for a good time…”  You can hear the adoring fans chanting it now.  The adapted Nashville feel enhances the sentiment.  In that way she’s a sure thing for fans of Margo Price and Kacey Musgraves.  We also hear the classic influence of Dolly Parton.

The production quality and her silky smooth voice are fit for a commercial country crossover, but when it comes to indie country fans Bad Decisions is a sure thing.  It’s the perfect addition to every hipsters BBQ playlist.  Let’s get boujee.

Donovan Woods – 116 West Main, Durham, NC

We caught a whiff of Jackson Browne and Paul Simon in the lyrical charm heard from Donovan Woods and his new single 116 West Main, Durham, NC.  He adapts that influence in a similar manner to indie colleagues Josh Ritter and Wilco.  To be fair, Donovan Woods has his own groove within this vibe.

The single is a splash of water to the face.  From the first infectious moments you give yourself to his vocal stewardship, as he asserts the mood of the moment.  It’s a token you want to keep with you, and the ideal first song of the day.  Start it off right.

Olive Klug – What To Make Of Me

We can get a little bluegrass country dusty from time to time.  Olive Klug wrangled us into her conceptual rodeo on her peppy new single What To Make Of Me.  Her convincing twang and the trademark arrangement add to the historical reference.

There’s an authenticity to Olive Klug in contempt of pop Country’s typecast facade, and we’re thankful for it.  It’s that rare aura of bluegrass country that indie music fans still delight in, much like how they dig artists like Brandi Carlile and Sierra Ferrel.  Olive Klug is a real one.

Axel Flóvent

In tandem with his growing catalog, Don’t Wait For Summer is another gorgeous song from songwriter Axel Flóvent.  The dreamy layered arrangement has us drawing comparisons to the production style of underrated turn of the century innovators Doves.

The song’s a gem, and the video is a revelation.  Beautifully shot, the heartwarming story chronicles the relationship between two young companions.  There’s an aura of youthful discovery to this visual poetry.  Like a portrait of a moment that reflects our shared existence.  To have a true friend, there’s nothing more precious.
