Retro Pop Revival – Matte Blvck, Venture Boi, Hamish Hawk, Eny, Lola Santiago

Melodic industrial synthwave has a champion in Matte Blvck.  Their new single Pupula Duplex cites memories of how Prodigy broke through the mainstream in the mid 90s with their undeniably catchy brand of techno.

It’s a testament to the effective vocal drop ins and the songs undeniably infectious nature.  They offer some valuable substance you can hold on to, while the music delivers with every emphatic drop.  The songs a great ice breaker for people who don’t think they don’t like industrial techno.  We’re big fans.

We dig the nostalgic dance pop feel of Venus Fly Trap, the new single from Venture Boi.  There’s an enhanced emotional sensibility in a way that connects with an influence of Morrissey.  It honors new waves sentimental value, as 80s pop materialized that shared intensity we all experience in adolescence.  You have to cope with your feelings in new ways.

Venus Fly Trap also embraces a modern synth pop influence with some textured bass tones in the vein of Daft Punk.  It’s a beautiful stylistic blend we can’t get enough of.

Hamish Hawk – Nancy Dearest

Hamish Hawk hits all the marks on their new single Nancy Dearest.  The effective production honors an instinctually intriguing composition.  It starts with the lyrics.  The clever quips grab you immediately.

“Who needs heaven?”  Just the reference cites an influence of David Byrne and cements the art pop assimilation.  We also hear an influence of David Bowie.  It fits the post punk inspired new wave cache.  A song this good should get a proper music video companion, and Hamish Hawk delivers.  Video above.  Don’t skip any of it.

Eny and Blackhawk caught our attention with their new single Hear Me Out.  This is assertively a modern retro synth pop classic.  It’s a synthwave revelation.  Whenever you think this inspired well has been tapped a new single comes along to reignite the flame.  Hear Me Out has that kind of effect.

It adapts an influence of Robyn into the synthwave canon convincingly.  In that way it connects with producers like FM-84 and Dana Jean Phoenix.  “Give Me A Sign.”  We love it.

If you love immersive expressive producers, then you’ll adore Lola Santiago just as much as we do. The San Fernando native who currently resides in LA recently dropped two wonderful singles. We got lost in the dreamy appeal of See You Dance. For us she blends the aesthetics of Imogen Heap and The Beach Boys on this gorgeous single.

Most recently she dropped a fresh synthwave gem called Milk and Honey. Her voice adapts elegantly into this retro pop framework. It’s a vibe that should instantly connect with fans of NINA and KRISTINE. Stylistically it recalls synthwave first wave and the song featured on the now classic soundtrack DRIVE.

We adore this kind of eclectic touch. Lola Santiago is featured on our Best New Synthwave Playlist.
