Best New Rock – Parallel, Viruette, Zebra Crossing

We adore the nostalgic authenticity of Painkiller, the new single from Parallel.  Gothic post punk is having a moment, and despite the more modern iterations that employ new production styles, Parallel keep Painkiller classic.

The sonic throwback only amplifies the association, and they do it well.  If the Smiths leaned more gothic post punk we imagine they would sound a bit like Painkiller.  That’s a compliment.  Hear for yourself.

Three piece Boston based band Viruette recently release their new album Your Lacuna.  Altogether it’s a fantastic release that honors their influences while offering some new energy within that vibe.  On the stand out single Eyesore Symphonette we can hear a blend of Dr Dog, Modest Mouse, and Build To Spill.  Like all of them the arrangement is smart and the inspired vocal performance is exhilarating.  The writing is smart and a testament to their collective effort, as syncopated progressive shifts adapt relentlessly.  It’s a journey of a song.

The single Capture adds some more dreamy indie pop contrast, as the vibe cites additional influences like The Smiths and Sparklehorse.  It’s catchy and calculated, with thoughtful guitar progressions that emphasize the writings harmonious brilliance.  The two tracks are a great spectrum of vibe to the album as a whole.  Get into it!

Groove and attitude permeate from Napoleon, the new single from Zebra Crossing.  The track is a stylistic smoke show.  The influential range is dynamic, flaunting the essence of Iggy Pop and The Stones in the verse section before adapting like a modern Prince in the songs infectious chorus.  It’s a groovy blend of pop and rock that still feels connected to the underground.  It’s all about its edgy appeal, an affect enhanced by the candid spoken word poetry.
