Best New Indie – HANDSOME, Jess Kallen, Leah Rye, Cereus Bright,

Handsome gets the indie kids bumping on their infectious new single Pulse.  A collab with South St, The indie pop meets dance club blend recalls the aesthetic that made Sylvan Esso a cross genre smash.  HANDSOME adds their own exotic flare with the contrasting vocals, each with their own mystique and adapted flavor. The melodies are succulent, especially the voice that accompanies the beat drop.  The composition adds to the melodic allure, with impressive variation and surprise to match the melody’s intrigue.  We find it irresistible.

Leah Rye – The Observer

We were drawn into the glorious contrast heard on The Observer, the new single from Leah Rye.  The aggressive drums explode out of the gate.  Her vocals bring an emotive lush delivery, one that she controls effectively.  Her voice is rich with enough depth to bring additional weight to the mix.  Its impressively dynamic, pushing to its second passion fueled level at the songs midway point.

The composition is full of surprise and intriguing variation, and the arrangement adds to the collective drama.  Her star power is on full display in the songs companion video, as her vibe exudes strength, confidence, and majestic beauty.  Thematically the video plays with the songs acquired title and prescribed meaning, as Leah wanders like a ghost in both urban and natural landscapes.  The mix is big and lush, this is how we imagine Clairo might sound if produced by The War On Drugs.

Cereus Bright brings soft fury on their infectious new single Seven Wonders.  The singers lush melodic delivery has indie folk roots, while the arrangement suggests an indie rock influence.  We hear evidence of Jose Gonzalez with an upbeat tempo design akin to mid career Radiohead or classic Midlake.

Seven Wonders is exotic and cinematic within a minimalistic compositional framework.  The sonic atmosphere constantly evolves and accentuates the songs melodic details using an array of synths and orchestral instruments.  It’s as if the the melodic atmosphere is fluttering around the compositional core, like melodic birds dancing around the songs center.  It’s adds both excitment and psychedelic brilliance, adding to the trippy aura of the collective work.
