Best New Indie – Kwesi Foraes, Flight Attendant, vict molina, Ivan & Alyosha

Kwesi Foraes gives vintage soul an indie spirit with his recent breakthrough single Detroit.  An influence of Gnarls Barkley and Citizen Cope collides with the classic works of Al Green and Otis Redding on this instant classic.  Foraes flaunts his candid battered delivery, conjuring a history of hurt and oppression on this heartfelt tribute.

More than just an infectious soul rock hit, Detroit gracefully approaches sensitive ground.  The legacy of Motown shines within the shadows of this new forgotten metropolis.  Aiming to make a comeback, the single could be the anthem to hold this movement up, but lyrically it feels like Foraes is making peace while pushing boundaries.  It’s a musical conversation that offers melodic comfort for a broken heart.

Flight Attendant is infectious on their new single Therapy Couch.  A catchy composition at its essence, the song is enhanced by a sultry performance by the bands lead singer.  With a seductive swagger and funky pump she accentuates the melody with percussive flare.  She’s taking some style cues from MJ and adapting them with a new indie sensibility.  That affect recalls recent releases by Haim and Christine and the Queens.  For Flight Attendant, that’s some enviable company to be in.  Two projects absolutely adored by their fans and known for their fun smart songwriting.

Though their vocals will command your attention, Flight Attendant is a proper Nashville four person band with real breakthrough potential.  Don’t sleep on this indie pop buzzworthy sleeper.  Dig in now and say you heard them first.

You will lose yourself within the lullaby delivery known to vict molina.  Her voice delicately charts the melody of her new single the rain will stop soon.  The artist elegantly bridges the gap between indie folk and alternative R&B.  The single finds gorgeous melancholy with contrast offered in the groovy electro beat that drives it through.

The drums add to the singers seductive essence, as her soft delivery borders on sultry even within this melancholy framework.  It’s a byproduct of her otherworldly vocal prowess, with the skill and ability to quiet a crowd.  Stylistically it ranks somewhere between Rhye and Lizzie McAlpine, blending polar auras in a way thats natural and fluid.

Ivan & Alyosha – Can’t Fight The Feeling

Ivan & Alyosha are anthemic on their recent Can’t Fight The Feeling.  An epic song with a sentimental vibe, the band accentuates it all with an incredible music video.  It recalls classics like Stand By You and Goonies, movies that effectively capture youth and adventurism.  Those cinematic comparisons should be enough to get you to press play, but artistically the video is more than just a cool uptick for the project.

It’s an offer for the artist to share something about their own journey, and bring that story full circle.  The ability for them to see the connection and celebrate it adds to the songs already present passionate conviction.  A solid indie rock song with classic tendencies, it stylistically recalls cult favorites The Delta Spirit and new indie breakthroughs Houndmouth.
