Emerging Folk and Indie Country – ALIA, Beryl, Hooks and the Huckleberries, Paris Paloma

London based recording artist ALIA embraces their path for self discovery on their recent debut EP SOHO Sessions, Side A.

The artist poetically charts a patchwork of moments and memories that unlocked their truth.  It’s engraved into the narrative of Cellar Door.    “I remember that late night in April.”  Presented with the bare arrangement of guitar and voice, ALIA shows that’s all thats needed to capture your attention.  The artists possesses a dynamic voice that can erupt with rapture at an instant.  It suits Cellar Doors dark moody energy.

ALIA channels the spirits on The Heart Of The Wolf.  The artist is visceral.  They sing with power and conviction as they assert their truth.  How could I speak, if I wasn’t afraid … that I could fuck it up, and make a huge mistake.”  Their vintage jazz bred rumble adds to the projects rootsy flavor.  The songs within SOHO sessions offer new stories within the canon of folk.  The compositions themselves capture the aura while embrace new melodic flows.

The subsequent To Be The Man In Your Plan builds out of a hymnal choir backdrop into a traditional groovy guitar based tempo.  The voices trail them like haunting spectres, carrying the ghosts of their past with them through the song.

Collectively this deep dark release reflects the artists passion regarding  people’s free will and the human right to unconditionally love whom they choose, and to know they are not alone in the diverse world we live in.  With their artistry they bring real emotion to the fight; where words fall short, art and emotions tell the story.

Lose yourself within the haunting beauty that is Hands to Dirt, the new single from Beryl.  The singer has a gorgeous trembling vibrato.  It has an instinctual candid quality, presenting untamed and derived from emotion.  The vocal overall is captivating and the music arrangement matches its rare appeal.

The writing is collectively innovative within a familiar melodic framework.  The guitars and drums embrace that unconventional adaptation, pushing the boundaries of this indie alt folk canon.  Hands to Dirt should connect with fans of Big Thief and Alex G as well as the indie folk world at large.

Hooks & The Huckleberries drop a dreamy alt Americana gem with their recent Jemez.  This classic composition embraces new stylistic movements in the sonic arrangement.  It’s as if Explosions of the Sky collaborated with Jason Isbell.

The song at its essence is a sentimental alt country Americana jam.  It has some classic flair in the vein of Mellencamp, feeling more small town America than Cowboy farmland.  They sing of soft drugs and dusty dives in contrast to name brand pickups and corporate beers.  It’s a testament to the aura of their treasured Jemez, and the singer honors that detail with a passionate performance worthy of an alt country breakout.

Paris Paloma is intoxicating on her recent yeti.  Her soft lullaby delivery has a comforting affect.  She navigates her upper register soothingly, finding the highest notes carefully and settling them softly into the musics gentle design.

Every instrument is performed with careful intention, played delicately but calculated.  The mix adapts in tandem with the compositions exotic surprise, transforming cinematic in the songs final movement with extra embellishments of echo and atmosphere.  It trails the singers hypnotic journey as she tangles you within her entrancing melodic web.  yeti is elegant indie folk that should be embraced by the scene at large.  It’s a sure thing for fans of Weyes Blood, Jessica Pratt, and Fleet Foxes.
