Undiscovered Gems – Citizen Cope, Outland, Daley Road, S.N.A.K.

Citizen Cope is due for a Victory March.  An artist who does it on his own terms, he continues to expand on his trademark sound in jest of mainstream’s relentless pull.  Where you saw a flash in the pan the artist saw a 20 plus year career built on urban flow and epic production blends that bridge acoustic rock and hip hop.

The Victory March honors the sentiment with an anthemic cinematic progression suitable for closing credits at the end of an impactful film.  And for Citizen Cope, an ending brings a new beginning, as the new album and coinciding successful tour ends his trials of having to prove anything to anyone.

Outland showcases their rare exotic delivery on the hypnotic new single inside a room.  Beautifully produced, the subtle electronic touches accentuate nostalgic melodic clues, stylstically bridging the legacies of Kate Bush and Peter Gabriel with new influences like James Blake and London Grammar.

The aesthetic is intoxicating and the artist is smart to commit to the vibe over the allure of conventional hook and bait arrangements.  The chorus melts unassumingly into the collective musical world, as inside a room is like its own audible token, ready to transport you back into its musical comfort with every transaction.

Something gorgeous this way comes.  Daley Road grabs our attention again with the cosmic ambient immersion of Song For You.  The slow building drama cites a classical scope of influence, reimagined with new sonic tools like auto-tune.

An immersive imaginative gem, adding sounds from nature is part of the projects ethos.  Beneath Song For You waves caress a shore line, gently breaking like the real life trials that inspired such resonating melancholy.

At this point you just can’t deny that Everybody Wants To Rule The World is likely a top 100 all time song.  The jam has legs, and any time it his the speakers it wakes something in you.  Quite frankly, it’s magical.  A perfect arrangement that simply stands alone as a composition.  Within the canon of 80s new wave pop its near the top, if not number 1.  Consider the influence that decade has had on the next 40 years, that’s high praise.  Even more, the song has inspired some exciting cover adaptations, that famous xylophone version likely being the most recognizable.

The jazz fusion duo S.N.A.K. has added their own interpretation to the group, and it freakin’ delivers.  Victor Wooten level bass playing from Marcelo Maccagnan and insane drumming from Maxime Cholley is all that’s needed to blow your mind.  Besides some atmospheric haze nothing more is needed to warp this classic.  Their musicianship is unbelievable and they do the song justice.  Both fans of Jazz and contemporary pop will enjoy this killer rendition.
