Best New Rock – Storm Franklin, JW Paris, The Virginia Planes, Notbrian

Storm Franklin are our new garage punk heroes.  Their single Einz Zwei Drei Martini has it all.  The jam is full of vintage attitude, angst, and energy.  Stylistically it recalls MC5 and early Pretenders.  The vibe is infectious within a classic design.

Storm Frankline – Einz Zwei Drei Martini

The riffage is fairly familiar but with their unique personalities they make it their own.  The music video showcases that detail, featuring the band playing on the street in front of a downtown store and weathering the interpretations provided by cheesy pedestrians. It mirrors classic scenes from 60’s iconic street performances.  Is it good?  Dude it’s great.

The energy and stylish flavor that makes JW Paris stand out is on full display in the video for their new single Leave It Alone.  The noir color palette and frantic cuts blend a classic and modern influence, not unlike the bands trademark sound.  A blend of classic rock and indie alternative, Leave It Alone should connect with fans of cherished recent rock acts like QOTSA and Arctic Monkeys.

JW Paris – Leave It Alone

JW Paris features a fiery hard hitting female drummer, the band is both breaking through barriers and genuinely out rocking their peers. That sentiment recalls the works of another buzzworthy act, Soraia.  JW Paris shares in their authentic aesthetic and should catch the attention of Sirius station The Underground Garage.  JW Paris has already received extensive national radio play from BBC Radio 1, BBC Introducing, Radio X (main playlist), Absolute Radio, Amazing Radio and others.   Leave it Alone is set to continue the trend.  Jump in now and say you knew them when.

The Virginia Planes caught our attention with the epic vibe of their new single Grounded.  This anthemic breakthrough by this German indie export combines an influence of shoegaze and indie pop elegantly.  It’s a dreamy listen with some notable contrast in the form of a duet. The passionate male vocal interweaves between a more dreamy female lead.  The affect is cinematic and honors the musics immersive design.

Grounded is meant to be played loud so that the sonic layers can enwrap you in their harmonious depth.  It’s a trademark feature known to shoegaze and The Virginia Planes employ it masterly.

The Virginia Planes bridge the gap between Lush and The Deftones.

Notbrian makes the most of their unconventional baritone on their catchy new single Had Fun / Warranty Expired.  The singers candid delivery mumbles seductively.  “I had fun getting to know you, I suppose, but you’re broken man.  Whaddya know.”

It’s a gorgeous blend of new wave and post punk with an indie sensibility.  A combination of stylistic nostalgia akin to Joy Division and The National but slightly more abstract than both.   It’s a testament to the rare vocal delivery and its odd seduction.
