Undiscovered Indie Folk Gems – Jess Nolan, Brandon De La Cruz, Ora Cogan, Winter Mountain

Jess Nolan seduced us with an immersive dreamy vibe on their single Windowpanes.  This gorgeous arrangement engulfs you in its sonic spectrum.  From the depths of the low end to the fluttering atmospheric guitars, Windowpanes is produced effectively.  At its core, Nolan’s intoxicating delivery.  A true siren with a smoky hypnotic flow that falls patiently.  Candid and full of emotion, Nolan is perfect on this breakthrough hit.

The composition has classic instincts in the vein of Joni Mitchell or Carly Simon, while the vibe trends contemporary indie in the vein of Norah Jones or Raising Sand.  Soon they’ll be defining it as vintage Jess Nolan, as this star on the rise has their own signature touch.  It’s that enigma that has won them a signing with Righteous Babe records, the kind of label fit to put them on the map.

Brandon De La Cruz got under our skin with the indie folk dream that is I Love You Babe.  A cover of this Michael Hurley new cult classic, it’s illuminated with Brandon’s ASMR hush delivery.  He slowly plots this narrative naturally, letting the music flow in contempt of modern pops quantized maladaption.

The stylistic call and response backing vocals give this minimalistic folk enough stylistic flash to shine bright.  It’s a rare nostalgic touch presented effectively on this haunting tribute.

The recording is intimate, you can hear the wood bend beneath his fingers and the whisper from his breath.

Ora Cogan – Dyed

Freak folk gets a proper psychedelic chamber folk twist courtesy of Ora Cogan.  Exotic tribalistic musical legacies intersect with 60s folk pop innovators on Dyed.  Noodly guitars that drift off tune playfully with Cogan’s mischievous soaring vocal create a cinematic affect.  We hear evidence of Syd Barrett, the Grateful Dead, and Nico.

Cogan is a prolific eclectic artist quickly rising in the ranks on our buzz radar.  We recently fell for her infectious Cowgirl and now we’re smitten with this additional discovery.  Where she goes from here, we can’t wait to see.

Winter Mountain caught our attention with their new single For Your Love.  The singer has an intriguing broken delivery.  We hear similarities to Paolo Nutini and Rod Stewart.  The singer for Winter Mountain controls his rustic voice impressively.

The composition has nice dramatic swings and an expressive overall arrangement.  The sweeping violins and intersecting mandolins add an immersive appeal.  The headphone mix is cinematic with flashes of surprise swimming around the central vocal.  The combination of a unique voice and this kind of dynamic arrangement gives For Your Love buzz indie folk potential.
