Emerging Folk – Holy Matter, Vaarin, Elisapie, Tommy Ashby

Holy Matter exits the Time Machine with a new hit in hand.  Their song Eve’s Hollywood channels 60s folk pop convincingly.  Its an effective dose of retrofuturism, one that finds new melodic realms in less travelled retro formats.  The legacy of Phil Spector, the Mamas and the Papas, and dreamy Hollywood musical productions find a proper purveyor to keep these sounds new.

Singing about the Hollyland adds to the songs conceptual flair.  We find it intensely convincing.  If you told us it was a long lost treasure, we’d believe you.  Featuring contributions from members of Big Search, Sonny & the Sunsets, Papercuts, and more, Holy Matter is truly sacred community art.

Vaarin – Made For Love
Vaarin – Dark Matter

Dark moody indie folk finds a champion in the dynamic work of Vaarin.  From the abstract dreamy design of Dark Matter to the lullaby nostalgic drip of Made For Love, Vaarin shows she’s special.

Both releases are part of her gorgeous art centric release The Identity of Belonging.  The collective works highlight her haunting vibrato and notable artistic touch.  The arrangements are thoughtful and feature eery atmospheres and electro flavored arrangements to spin these vibes modern.  She’s like an indie folk FKA Twigs.  Sounds intriguing?  It is.  The works stand strong on their own, as do her music videos.  Dig into all of it.

Elisapie – Qimmijuat  (Wild Horses)

There is a magical project coming from the Arctic and they have our full attention.  The artist known as Elisapie reimagines popular songs, adding her unique cultural touch.  Director, composer, singer-songwriter and activist, Elisapie Isaac comes from the Arctic and identifies as Inuit.  She brings elements of her native music into these works, and her new release Wild Horses, that iconic song from The Rolling Stones, has us floored.

The song is accompanied by a music video release that features her community with Roma style artistic flair.  It’s a story of existence within her culture.  It’s romantic and reaches beyond chic, into something more sacred.  The fabric of our lives, and the small details that make this life tolerable.  It seemingly takes place during those slim summer months, when birds fly free.  A songbird like Elisapie knows not to waste it.

Tommy Ashby has offered a Binaural Acoustic Version of their song Moonflowers.  This comforting folk lands soft.  It recalls the works of Darlingside and Kings of Convenience in how it lends itself to coffeehouse breaks.

Ashby has his own careful approach, adding to the candid musicality of the moment.  Like first wave Bon Iver  or Jose Gonzalez they stack their vocals to add depth and dreamy affect.

The lyrics have sentimental relatibility, as Ashby pens the soundtrack of our lives and this new universal family dynamic. “My best friend, every summer we pretend that we were Brothers, didn’t know it then.”
