Undiscovered Gems – Pink Sky, Are We Hunting, Siúcra, Ghosts on the Wall

Pink Sky drops a proper dream pop ballad with their new single You Don’t Care.  Arranged differently it could be a contemporary work, but performed in this manner You Don’t Care sounds beautifully eery.  It’s a testament to the singers haunting delivery.  That dark intention breaks through in the songs dynamic bridge section, a pivot that brings exciting contrast to the overall release.

Elements known to dream pop and shoegaze both have a stake in this design.  Stylistically we think it connects with the works of Beach House and The XX.  You Don’t Care joins a flurry of notable releases from this talented married duo. The chemistry is enviable.

Are We Hunting California Kurt Cobain. (Hell yeah we aren’t) One is the band name, the other is the song name, set next to each other they make for clever art.  Much like the clever indie alt vibe heard in their music.  Post Punk guitar licks intersect with indie slacker swagger on this stylistic gem.  We hear elements of Kurt Vile and early War On Drugs to match their DIIV influence.

The vocal is slightly rugged adding to the authenticity and overall attitude.  There’s a sprinkle of Justin Townes Earl style dive bar Americana rock too (RIP).  We can dig it.

Siúcra exercises their complex mental state on their new release Anxiety.  The 3/4 design swings fluidly, conceptualize the aimless rush of thoughts that plague an anxious episode.  Interjecting string builds emulate the real life drama of an episode on the brink of self destruction.  The gorgeous arrangement gets lifted by an intoxicating vocal performance, one that rings with the dark seductive curiosity that draws us to such works.

Why do we find desire in the torment of others?  There’s something oddly sultry about this work.  Stylistically it blends an influence of Radiohead with Fiona Apple.  Siúcra is delightful.

Ghosts on the Wall caught our attention with their new release Sideways.  A catchy song in any light, it’s illuminated by a dynamic presentation.  It recalls the works of Bright Eyes with the catchy alt folk appeal of Alex G or Strand of Oaks.  It makes sense considering it involved the sonic touch of Philly mastering wizard Jeff Zeigler.  The modern indie sound has a lot to owe to Ziegler, so it makes sense that this Baltimore export would look to Philly to dress their works proper.

With a cinematic fiddle Sideways has exquisite musical details to match its alt folk slack.  Paired with the catchy percussive cadence of the vocals this hit has real crossover potential.  A gem of the underground could rise to the surface.
