Best New Indie – Small Million, Citizen Cope, mindchatter, Softmax

Small Million caught our attention with their new single Old Habits.  Their singer has an intoxicating vocal delivery.  Her voice quivers with rare conviction, as if she’s asserted which feelings she conjures into her performance.  There are exotic details to her style, similar feature that lifted singers like Sinead O’Connor (RIP) and Natalie Merchant.  She brings their aura into the indie pop framework.

Small Million vaguely reflects a vibe known to Phoebe Bridgers or Clairo.  It’s an exciting blend boosted by the artists own clever lyrical touch.  Old Habits is relatable in a way that’s admiringly trivial.  It offers some rebellious angst within the routine mundane.  It’s a cynical gem, the kind that you and your best hold on to like an anthem.

Citizen Cope recently dropped his new 11 track album The Victory March.  The release features 7 songs and 4 alternate versions.  The indie music pioneer continues to carve his own unique path in the industry, a journey that has seen him singed to 4 different major labels on his way to ascending fully independent.

Having broke onto the international scene with his iconic early 2000 releases, the artist proved timeless as a new generation of fans embrace his music with every collateral introduction.  Whether it be through a music soundtrack or in a local grocery stop, when Citizen Cope hits your ears for the first time he grabs your attention.  It’s a testament to his unique vocal delivery, full of swagger and urban soul.  It’s a trademark that finds itself in everything he does.

The Victory March finds his music adapting to a new broad indie cinematic framework.  Flashes of indie and pop orchestral shine on stand outs like Good Will Overcome and the title track.  The two acoustic versions highlight the artists tradition of occasionally doing solo acoustic tours.  Its another strong release from on of our favorite underground heroes.

mindchatter shows there’s more innovation to be had within the relationship of technology and pop.  The new single Day Dreams rings familiar while adapting this vibe into a new sonic world.

It’s a world that sounds surrounded by electrical trips and sonic glips.  Within that word mindchatter finds true musicality.  It recalls the iconic breakthrough known to Postal Service with some of the LCD Soundsystem inspired adaptation also known to Petey.

Recently signed to Foreign Family Collective, the label imprint run by electronic luminaries ODESZA, Mindchatter has the backing to breakthrough too.  Say you heard it first.

Softmax makes a strong statement with their new single Swishers.  With catchy appeal they announce their mainstream pop potential.  The true anti-hero, Softmax takes the pump of Banks and FKA Twigs and gives it radio pop flash.  It’s heard in the songs infectious chorus, an undeniable melodic hook that appropriately addictive.  You crave for it between every dramatic verse.

Some intricate rhythmic production gives the song broad indie intrigue, adding to its wide scope of influence.  Swishers should be the jam to put Softmax on the map.  The Chicago native has teamed with London based independent label Psychotic Reaction Music for this new single release.  Say you heard her first.
