Undisovered Gems – stillblue, The Exbats, Jasper and the Jokers, RYTERBAND

Memories of George Harrison attack in the opening drop of Wait for Me, the new single from stillblue.  An influence of modern indie collides when the vocal interjects, adding some emo flash as the group collectively yells “wait for me.”  It’s as is Built to Spill and the Beatles had a baby and it’s absolutely fantastic, just how you’re imagining it.

stillblue is a five-piece band and they describe themselves as emulsifying indie-rock, folk, and alt-country with lyrics meditating on love, loss, and getting older in the perspiring humidity of Miami, Florida.  Well that makes sense.  If these were our musical inclinations and we were stuck in superficial Miami we’d be pissed too.  We think fans of Petey or Band of Horses would love this.

The Exbats show there are still some uncovered retro worlds to revive with their new single Like it Like I Do.  The band nails this sound both in their writing and in the sonic design.  It recalls first wave punk pioneers and how they embraced the 50s in the midst of Yacht Rocks heyday.

The lyrics are appropriately simple while bordering on genius.  They find the middle ground between Grease and Dirty Dancing.  It’s fairly theatrical and could be the highlight of musical or the stand out number in a Jersey Shore throwback bar.  We hear the Kinks, The Contours, and the Gogo’s all at once.  It’s freakin magnificent.

American’a classic rock influence still shines bright on Thinking, the new single from Jasper and The Jokers.  These jammers fit in well with recent breakthroughs like the Heavy Heavy and The Murlocs.  They bring their own twist to the sound, recalling bands like The Flying Burrito Bothers but with new reckless fury.

They sing of drug binges on one end and getting back on track on the other.  They remind us that the rock and roll journey might still be a chance at redemption, rather than glory.  It’s a testament to their fresh energy and genuine raw appeal.  Thinking, frankly, sounds like it doesn’t care what you think.  It’s here to kick ass and claim its truth.

If Dave Matthews embraced an influence of post rock and shoegaze it might sound like Camouflage, the new single from RYTERBAND.  If that statement doesn’t make you want to listen then you suck.  Camouflage is freaking awesome.  It’s an epic journey in song and cinematic melodic vision.  The progressive movements are intoxicating, thrusting you into conjured imaginative images beyond our understanding.

The artist brings passion and emotion to his vocal performance to match the arrangements dramatic appeal.  An anthem of introverts fit for a movie companion, Camouflage is a musical conversation between the artist and all of us.  “I don’t like this slow fade it has to be halfway.  Like I’m stuck behind the frame.”  Camouflage is truly beautiful.
