Music Videos We Love – DOWNGIRL, Ora Cogan, Dax, Surf Harp

DOWNGIRL flips the cultural stereotype with the new video for their single Boys.  A sultry post punk anthem, the bands eccentric insane persona gets amplified within this stylistic gem.  This is our kind of bizarre.

Like the biker cult goth punks of your fantasies DOWNGIRL breeds sexual violence and inspires it with visual brilliance, illuminated by an effective color palette erupting with sexual confusion in the videos closing moment.  Captivating to the last drop, BOYS will keep your attention and inspire you to see this band in concert. Did you get turned on?! Hell yeah.  Check it out.

Ora Cogan drops another visual gem with the video for her new single Feel Life.  Once again we are left in envy at the authentic vibe permeating from her psychedelic punk cult.  The classic VHS era cinematography adds to this scenes bizarre arrangement. Thematically it’s as if this lost VHS was found in the bottom of some thrift shop bin.

If this isn’t your normal then it might seem kind of weird, like a David Lynch Twin Peaks dreamworld.  We were half waiting for the fangs to drop and the feeding to begin, but the choreography substitute is equally seductive.  Like the monologue in Juno, you really do want to be them, or with them.  Despite their non-conformist roots there’s something elitist about their appeal.  Like a secret society you need to be invited into.  Feel Life gives us a sneak peak, you’ll have to find her in concert to experience the real thing.

What is Life?  It’s the first thing you see in the opening moments of The Abyss, the new video from Dax.  Real struggle meets iconic flow as the buzz worthy MC transports from the apartment to the desert where he spits lyrical truths.  A metaphorical abyss lurks.  For us it represents the dark side of his reality, one that constantly threatens to derail both his artistic journey and his mental health.

His prolific verses are relatable and speak to new challenges in the modern music industry.  It speaks to the mantra of our blog.  The numbers don’t tell the whole story.  “I’m making music that you can’t just define by the numbers on my Spotify.”  F*ck the vanity metrics.  We’re listening for real.  This sh*t is dope.  Dax crushes.  Get in it.

Surf Harp caught our attention with the video for their song Willowing.  An intriguing eccentric post punk jam suits the videos hypnotic pixelated theme.  An array of hot topic images dominate a dystopian telecast, one that haunts these trivial settings like a punk inspired horror film.

The slow fades and classic video vessels add to the drama and warped hypnotism.  The design is entirely effective and the singers alt goth delivery adds to the musical theater.  Musically this is how we imagine LCD Soundsystem might present if they made a Rocky Horror style rock opera.  Check it out.
