Retro Pop Revival – Piper Cole, Wyatt Blair x Buddy Crime, DIAF, Great Northern

With her new single Gravity, songwriter and recording artist Piper Cole emerges from a dark period into new realms of self discovery.  It erupts out of the introduction and into the songs infectious beat drop, one that features a rare catchy nostalgic brilliance.  The chorus melody teases an influence of 90s pop and harkens to the 80s influence that inspired this overlooked era.

This is a proper hook, it’s entrancing and intoxicating.  Entirely addictive, you want more and more of it.  The arrangement cleverly dips in and out before offering an extended dose in the songs final movements.  Stylistically Piper Cole blends the legacies of Kate Bush and Ace of Base.  An 80s child and long time psychotherapist, the vibe amplifies her inner spiritual connection.  She captures that essence gloriously on this stand out single.

Wyatt Blair & Buddy Crime – For The Thrill Of It

Wyatt Blair and Buddy Crime team up on an instant conceptual classic.  For The Thrill Of It is a catchy retro jam that effectively recalls the legacies of Duran Duran and Tears For Fears.  The sentiment is enhanced by a fun music video.  The duo keep it fun while leaning into cheeky cliches so convinced they feel fresh.

The song is a straight bop, from the timeless hook to the trademark sax solo, For The Thrill Of It gets right to the heart of what makes this iconic era invincible.  Checkout the video (see above) to get the whole vibe.

DIAF – DA DIAF DERF NED STEHBLEIM

We were drawn into the intense vibe of DA DIAF DERF NED STEHBLEIM, the new single from DIAF.  The aggressive stylistic blend of industrial, gothic, and retro pop lands infectious on this energetic masterpiece.  The companion video (See above) adds to the fun, as the artist passionately interprets the music with convincing theatrical bravado.

We think this appeals to fans of retro wave throwbacks as well as the industrial community at large.  And with this kind of emphatic performance, the music video should catch the attention of everyone.  It’s bizarre and we love it.

We dig the moody retro appeal of Bad Light, the new single from Great Northern.  The composition and production style brings cinematic drama.  That affect is accentuated by the singers convincing performance.

Conjuring a history of hurt heard in her trembling vibrato, Bad Light hurts so good.  She navigates the songs melodic spectrum effectively, touching on every branch from its emotive tree.  It’s a seductive hurt, recalling classic Prince with a stylistic semblance of the Eurythmics.

Landing indie vibes that trend between the worlds of Dark Wave and Electro Pop, Bad Light should also connect with fans of Sharon Van Etten and Florence Welsh.  Like them both, Great Northern has real breakthrough potential.
