Best New Rock – Ghost Prom, Tamra, Post-Modern Connection, The Trusted

Ghost Prom caught our attention with their new single 5AM.  The band takes some compositional cues from turn of the century indie starlets and updates them with modern indie pop reverence.  Wilco, Weezer, and The Shins all have some stake to this style, each equally inspired by the iconic works of The Beatles.

Ghost Prom give this influence new sonic presence with bright energized electrified tones.  They add a modern desolate narrative, one that speaks to the current generations inherited conundrum.  In our internet age of exposed enlightenment everything appears truly messed up, and these post millennials sound existentially burdened by the demand of modern life.  The juicy bent up guitar licks and pounding drums add to the angst while the vocal stays on brand, full of attitude and built up contempt.  It’s truth we adore and Ghost Prom brings a lot of it in a catchy melodic package.  We can dig it.

Tamra – Flood

Tamra effectively blends classic rock instincts into an indie vibe on their delightful new single Flood.  There’s a melodic resonance to the vocals and tempo progression that cites an influence of first wave emo bands like Braid or experimental rockers Modest Mouse.

Combined with the grunge alternative thrash of the rhythm guitar and the classic improvised flow from the lead playing, Flood is full of exciting contrast.  A catchy song at its essence, the lead guitar players adds dynamic intrigue.  Shades of both math and southern rock seep into his style.  We can dig it. Peep the video above!

Post-Modern Connection pulled us in with the catchy nostalgic flash of their new single If You Care.  Channelling The Cure and The Smiths with some modern indie sensibility familiar to The Strokes or Vampire Weekend, If You Care wears its influences on its sleeve while offering youthful energy to adapt these vibes new.

The performance pushes forward with captivating conviction, adding polish in contrast to this styles original loose nature.  We hear real radio potential.  Get to know Canada’s next great indie rock export.

The Trusted captivated us with the sentimental nostalgia heard on Marrow.  The UK indie new wave export gives the obsessive lover a proper tribute.   It’s a toxic obsession, unrequited by the paradigm of desire and so often a frustation to the collateral friendships and relationships burdened by their trivial worry.  In that way the singer sounds appropriately conflicted, channeling supreme emotive vibes known to 80s alternative and adding his own signature touch.

The band dresses the aura with sparkling melodic treats and an upbeat rhythm as if to tease like the playful receiver of this unrequited obsession.  The affect is cinematic and entrancing, adding a visionary component to the collective vibe.  In that way the band blends the styles of retro pop crossovers like The 1975 and inventive heartfelt songwriters like Elvis Costello. It’s a testament to the songs real radio potential and catchy essence.
