Someone recently asked me if Deftones are considered shoegaze. The South Carolina band SWEET SPINE bears attractive semblance to their sound, and their new single Darkness reiterates what makes that melodic fury so mesmerizing. You can’t deny its hard rock tendencies, and the contrast of the melodic vocal adds to its curious appeal. But it’s the emotional yearning of the vocal performance that amplifies the impact. Darkness never sounded so glorious.

“When I grow up I’ll be a Nun.” TOMI presents something truly twisted with her new single NUN. Major NSFW music video vibes bring context to this rapturous narrative. The chorus is absolutely effective, entirely anthemic and accentuated by an impressive one cut music video. TOMI herself is a true star embodying the chaos of this socio conundrum. We can dig it.
Wolf Alice and the Kills mixed with the art appeal of St Vincent are fair game to chart this vibe. TOMI has her own visceral aggressive flair and an art eccentric nature you’ll hope she’ll match in concert. Video or not, NUN is a smash hit.

WAASH laments that There’s Never Enough Voices. They present this work in an entrancing dark rock package, one that channels the aura of shoegaze and 80s alternative with daft appeal. We hear compositional evidence of projects like The Cult and early U2 with the shoegaze appeal of Low or Cocteau Twins. It’s catchy but treated with a reverberated vibe that’ll never pass for commercial. It’s one of the reasons we love it.

Rifles For Lucy caught our attention with their new single Ottimo. An intriguing composition, it’s clevely presented with a layered arrangement that illuminates its melodic sparkle. We hear some 80s alternative tendencies to the writing that resonate with the works of The Replacements and REM, with some added indie post punk disdained reverence in the spirit of Editors.
The singer brings vintage swagger that adds cinematic flair accented by the songs built up progression, a build that delivers in the songs closing anthemic moments.
