Best New Indie – The Amazing, Philine Sonny, Super City, LEISURE

After several years out of the limelight The Amazing are back and their new single Streetfighter honors their legacy as imaginative indie innovators.  The arrangement sparkles with sonic treats and attention to detail.  From the drum patterns to the atmospheric samples everything offers impact and adaptation upon a rich depth of influence.  Whats most significant is the conviction in their voice as they deliver the songs trademark line. The hiatus has only emboldened their fury.

Stylistically we hear some evidence of Echo and the Bunnymen and The Smiths with some classic folk pop appeal in the songs trademark chorus.  The Amazing are back, and Streetfighter is a glorious triumph.

Philine Sonny leaves little left unsaid on her new single Drugs.  She delivers these truths with a trembling sentimental vocal delivery.  Stylistically the vibe unfolds like a journey, channeling the trials heard within this expansive confession.  The affect is cinematic, with the lyrics offering descriptive details to chart this story.

Stacked vocals amplify every impactful moment as you repeatedly see fragments of your upbringing within this conflicted tale.  While the arrangement recalls the works of Big Thief the catchy anthemic vibe reflects the writing of Sam Fender or Gaslight Anthem, and some of the poetic quip known to Courtney Barnett.  For us its magnetic, with Sonny holding your interest to her last breath.  She’s the anti hero we need, she’s one of us.

Super City – Hang Up

We were drawn into the stylistic flash heard on Hang Up, the new single from Super City.  The chorus is absolutely infectious and stands out as the songs trademark detail.  The verses do well to setup every appropriate drop, and the impact is immense.  The arrangement is clever and the band does a lot with classic instrumentation.

The catchy radio anthem appeal within an indie construct recalls breakthroughs by Spoon, Phoenix, and Whitney.  Like them Super City is likely to crossover from indie darling to commercial break through.  Hang Up is the second single in advance of their new album Midnight Room due out later this month.  Say you heard them first.

LEISURE – Still Rolling

Now this is our kind of POP MUSIC.  Disco soul vibes are updated modern on the infectious new single Still Rolling, from LEISURE.  Vintage nostalgia sounds fresh on this stylistic masterpiece.  The vocals are silky smooth, alternating between the realms of falsetto and chill soul effectively. Every melody is seductively dreamy and the catchy appeal never relents.

Their nostalgic aura could draw comparisons to the recent works of Silk Sonic but in a more disco dance pop package.  We also hear the iconic influence of Bill Withers and Marvin Gaye.  Whats most notable is that Still Rolling hits all the marks within a minimilastic dance pop package.  No need to overproduce instant Gold, let it live.  We can dig it.
