Best New Indie – Font, Olivia Void, Carter James, Krooked Kings

We got wrapped into the electro experimental mind twist heard on It, the new single from Font.  Their experimental abstract nature suits the singers energetic frenzied nature.  This kind of intelligent electro post punk honors an influence of purveyors like the Talking Heads, LCD Soundsystem, and At the Drive In. It pushes that scope of influence forward while adding its own unique touch to that blend.

This is the new art pop, the kind of flash that a modern Andy Warhol would find fantastic.  Much like the generation that embraces it, Font are both angry and smart.  Be careful not to misunderstand their catchy nature.  There is real wrath here.

We were drawn to the exotic mystique heard on In November, the new single from Olivia Void.  An inclination towards Gothic retro pop suits this stylistic gem.  It’s paired with an unavoidable catchy musical nature.  Its most striking detail being Void’s haunting vibrato, full of mystery and curious appeal.

It’s slightly dark and eccentric without losing its chic excitability.  The collective dark contrast reflect’s Void’s Berlin roots.  A haven for new blends in art pop, Void honors that legacy while adding new stylistic realms.  We hear an influence of Kate Bush and Bjork with some added indie pop sensibility.

Carter James admits that his new single Can’t Help Myself is inspired by the vocal processing of Bon Iver and the instrumentation of Owl City.  It’s fair to acknowledge their influences, it also offers an effective chance for them to target their audience.  James effectively adds his own broad indie pop inspired melodic flair to the design.  Can’t Help Myself is immediately catchy and surely reflects a scope of influence but still stands alone as a composition.  Hear for yourself.

Krooked Kings caught our attention with their new single Headhunters.  This kind of insanely catchy indie rock design recalls an influence of early Radiohead with a new indie sensibility.  It’s brought through the influence of Tame Impala and into new realms known to breakouts like Day Wave and Cloud Nothings.

Headhunters has its own signature melodic details, it’s also just a great new release within this style, one that we find delectable. The band brings it live too, growing a loyal fanbase that’s guaranteed to put them on the map. Say you heard them first.
