Best New Rock – Glenna Jane, The Dangerous Method, Matthew Teardrop, Rocket Bike

Glenna Jane caught our attention with their new single Playing Dead.  Stylistically it’s an effective blend of grunge, shoegaze, and emo.  Jane’s voice adds intriguing contrast to the gloomy musical underlayer.  The writing is refreshingly smart, with rare progressions throughout that lend themselves to the compositions unique reverence.  Innovative guitar effects create rich dreamy atmospheres, all within a dark melodic construct.

Only her second single, Jane connected with producer Taro Hyodo to help illuminate her sound.  They’re a perfect match.   For us Playing Dead bridges the gap between Paramore and dark melodic bands like A Perfect Circle or Smashing Pumpkins.  Like Hayley, Glenna Jane’s voice pierces through the rock design with convincing attitude while retaining some pop sensibility.  It offers Glenna Jane a broad scope of interest within the world of rock, as Playing Dead will connect with underground and mainstream fans equally.

The Dangerous Method tag a classic vide on their convincing new single Parked Sideways.  We hear evidence of The Replacements and Gin Blossoms, updressed with an indie punk sensibility and some alt country flair as if to blend the aesthetics of Gaslight Anthem and Ryan Adams.  It’s a gorgeous timeless blend that lands intoxicating.  It’s a reflection of the inspired performance.  The entire band digs into every note with energetic intention, and the singer has an entrancing vibrato.  We adore it.

Matthew Teardrop – in a dream

Matthew Teardrop stays true to his moniker with his new single In A Dream.  He doesn’t waste any time getting to the heart of the matter, leaning into his emotional delivery from the first vocal note.  It’s effective and immediately pulls you in to what really makes him special.  His vocal adding an intriguing emotional element in the same manner that draws you to bands like My Morning Jacket, Band of Horses, and Fleet Foxes.  No matter the chords, his music will always stand out as a testament to that rare gift.  Watch the video above!

Rocket Bike – Two Oceans Down

Rocket Bike pulled us in with the anthemic appeal of their new single Two Oceans Down.  At its foundation it’s a refreshing minimalistic classic arrangement, adding melodic depth with only a couple guitar parts and then blasting off with a simple close out synth section.  The vocal delivers too. They blend an early career melodic sensibility known to Foo Fighters or Silverchair with some modern crossover indie emo alt vibes akin to Jimmy Eat World.  We can dig it.
