Women of Trip Hop – Softmax, Nównøis, LaMee, Clara Pople

Softmax pulled us in with the cinematic brilliance of their new single Longing.  They elegantly combine elements of electro pop and Trip Hop, with an equally dynamic composition that trends both dark and catchy.

Melodically it cleverly wades between the two worlds, with quick vocal riffs that pull the vibe in both directions.  That experimental electro blend combined with her catchy instincts could draw similarities to Banks, Little Dragon, and FKA Twigs.  We can dig it.

nównøis and LNOER team up for a magical new single, Making Headway (A Letter to Me).  Dark moody trip hop suits this sultry tortured vocal performance, one that feels trapped within an unrequited paradigm.  The insanity is honored by the beats hypnotic resolutions, trapping you in its cyclic groove.

We hear the classic influence of Massive Attack with an adapted vocal style that connects with new trip-hop pioneers like Amelie Swann and FEH.  Together with Nównøis they lead a trip hop revival that honors the classics.

Finnish electro pop duo LaMee take an influence of 70s and 80s funk and industrial and dress it with a trip hop sensibility on their contagious new single Escape.From()

Dark and moody, it’s the singers exotic seductive sultry attitude that draws you in with femme fatale reverence.  It’s all a mirage meant to enwrap you in the vibe before flipping the switch with demonic sonic wrath.  In that way it recalls the works of Massive Attack or darker Bjork.  A really exciting release from this under the radar gem.

Clara Pople – Balance

Clara Pople reigns infectious on her new single Balance.  This innovative blend of XX style minimalist dance pop and R&B urban swagger recalls the intriguing works of Sylvan Esso.  Like them Pople adds an inspired art film companion video (see above).  It features her in various costume and headdress, grooving fluidly.

Spliced shots conceptualize the theme of balance beautifully, while the exquisite costumery communicates the vibes high art intentions.  We love when artists set some fashion place marks within their vibe, and this serotonin vibe bodes well with a stylistic audience.
