Best New Indie – Humane the Moon, Madoux, Maria Lane, alexmaax

Post punk and indie pop both have a stake in DugOut, the infectious new single from Humane The Moon.  Full of attitude and angst, the artist brings an intimidating swagger.  There’s a frustration to his voice, a tried and tired affect that suggests he attempted to play by the rules only to find out the game was rigged against him.  He responds with an intriguing lyrical prowess, offering untravelled poetic realms that shine unassuming.

Musically you can trace this riff style back to Joy Division while the poeticl influence of LCD Soundsystem and TV On The Radio both find prevalence.  For us Humane The Moon is an exciting new discovery with buzz presence.

MADOUX – In Our Blood

MADOUX returns with the convincing indie pop feel of In Our Blood.  A seductive groove gets amplified by intoxicating melodic movements.  The composition is full of subtle surprise, slight alterations to tease your instinctual conventions.

The clever writing is matched by charming nostalgic quips that reflect the stylistic aura of Fleetwood Mac.  MADOUX channels their inspiration and an added indie influence of artists like Sharon Van Etten elegantly.  We find it irresistible.

You may have heard of carrie white.  Stephen Kings breakthrough character gets an indie homage on the new single from Maria Lane.  The artist embrace’s carrie’s anti-hero angle, one that honors the relatable victim in this complicated construct.  The composition is catchy while offering some conceptual connections courtesy of slightly warped chord voicings, citing the stories horror genre roots.  Otherwise Lane’s homage doesn’t present very scary, ,its catchy well produced indie pop sweetness.

Stylistically Lane bridges the realms of Ethel Cain and Holly Humberston.  It’s a testament to the songs radio potential while sneaking in a dark narrative, similar to how the original movie pulls you in with its teen-bop appeal before adapting into its sinister climax.

alexmaax – openended

Retro pop and indie pop converge poetically on Openended, the new single from alexmaax.  Producer Max Hershenow has enjoyed notable success as one half of the duo MS MR.  The new solo venture finds him fully embracing his emotive electro tendencies, utilizing soft melodic textures to chart this cosmic melancholia.

In an affect ascended from the influence of Peter Gabriel and adapted again by artists like Bon Iver or Francis and the Lights.  Hershenow finds new space within this realm, leaning into his own rare vocal delivery which adds an exotic foreign curiosity.  It’s the kind of curiosity and unfamiliar that indie listeners love.  We adore it.
