Indie Holiday Discovery – India Ramey, Aarktica, Roger Jaeger, Pyro

India Ramey strikes holiday Gold with her new single Cocktail for Christmas. Rockabilly Americana gets double dipped in retro brilliance on this fantastic release.  Ramey herself captures the aura of icons with an inspired vocal performance.

The band delivers too, with elite groove and jive that showcases their authenticity as students of this sound.  Fans of Loretta Lynn and Dolly Parton will instantly connect, but we think it’s good fun for everyone.  “All I want is a Cocktail for Christmas”. True That!

We adore how Aarkitca has adapted the John Prine Holiday classic Christmas In Prison.  It’s an honorable version that offers a sonic refreshment for the original while giving it a new stylistic aura.

We love how this version reminds us of the Pogues with some added atmospheric indie vibes akin to Iron & Wine.  There’s even some shoegaze or post rock influence heard in the immersive guitar work.  Altogether it’s epic, dramatic, and cinematic.  Much like the visionary imagery of Prine’s lyrical poetry.

Roger Jaeger – Happy XMAS (war Is Over)

Roger Jaeger gives Happy Xmas (War Is Over) an indie folk update.  Dare we say we prefer this to the John Lennon classic.  Jaeger’s version is slightly more playful and less dooming, as shuffling drums and a vibey piano soften its dooming melancholy nature.

Jaeger himself stretches to reach the highest notes in his range adoringly.  It adds emotional reverence and soul in place of Lennon’s more self righteous demeanor.  Jaeger for the win.

Pyro – Maybe’s It’s The Season

Pyro gives your holiday playlist some pop flavor with their single Maybe It’s The Season.  It’s a solid chill pop addition to your holiday line up, one that embraces recent mainstream realms familiar to Justin Bieber.  Not a slight, Beiber’s new releases are quite infectious, and PYRO fits the bill.   Maybe It’s The Season features a convincing vocal performance that’s radio ready, and some charming lyrics for substance.  Check it out.
