Best New Indie – Phantasm, Isla Noon, Wet Moon

Close your eyes and join us on a musical journey.  Lou Monroe lead us into a diverse dream realm with their new single phantasm.  Full of imagery and contrast, phantasm progresses between dooming and absolutely glorious.  It has an epic nature, one that embraces the vitality of our perplexing existence.

Perhaps there’s an anger here, but for us it’s more of a reclamation or discovery.  In that moment of discovery Monroe honors the feeling of ecstasy deliverance offers.  Beautifully produced, phantasm lands big with an arrangement fit for a futuristic orchestra.  Stylistically it blends the worlds of Imogen Heap and Hans Zimmer.

Isla Noon – Body

Isla Noon is captivating on her convincing single Body.  The song is an anthem for women empowerment and strength.  To honor that intention Noon delivers a show stopping chorus, one that hits you with the magnitude of her rhetoric.  This subject matter is typical to slow Lilith style ballads, but Isla Noon brings this notion into the world of pop with fiery conviction.

Isla Noon sings with a sense of ironic joy. It suits her edgy nature.  It’s sexy subject matter too, as the curvy mature female figure is the now the shape preferred in pop culture.  It’s what men really want and Noon knows it.  Stylistically this work connects with the aggressive femme pop appeal known to St Vincent and Caroline Polachek.  Like them Noon rises from the underground while retaining an opportunity for commercial success.  Body is the kind of hit to get her there.  Dig in.

Wet Moon – I Lose Control

Wet Moon reminds us that when the melody delivers the arrangement doesn’t need to be over embellished.  It’s not that we don’t appreciate the catchy rhythmic design heard on their new single I Lose Control, we just want to reference how it has little in common with the layered productions known to today’s indie music breakthroughs.

I Lose Control is salacious at its essence, taking cues from classic folk pop in how it cites a Bossa influence.  It’s a little quirky too, with a charm that recalls early psychedelic intrusions and how they inspired icons like The Beach Boys.  Hear for yourself.
