Music Videos We Love – Joh Chase, Geographer, Still Corners, Bathe Alone

A quirky eccentric interpretive modern dance performance shot in the style of Tim and Eric probably wasn’t what you would’ve imagined if you heard Avalanche in passing.  The new single from Joh Chase is fairly eclectic in its own right.  We hear a stomp and holla sensibility akin to Shovels and Rope with some of the added underground contrast known to Big Thief.

The video finds the artist front and center in a way that leaves them exposed and vulnerable.  What they bring honors the passion heard in the musical performance.  You just don’t land those closing inspired moments heard on Avalanche if you don’t have some reckless ruthlessness to you.  Joh Chase is as authentic as they come.

Geographer grabbed our attention with the new video for their single The Light in the Dark.  The video is both an intriguing portrait of the artist as well as a neat narrative.  It’s as much a performance piece as it is a candid reflection of the protagonists rehearsal practice.  Every motion is cleverly coordinative to accentuate the relationship of shadow and light.  There’s a lot of careful calculation within a static one shot design.  The songs retro appeal ties it to a feeling that recalls works like Maniac or Footloose, with a composition that embraces some of the indie sensibility known to Lo Moon and Francis & The Lights.  We simple adore it.  Check it out.

Strap in for the Oscar worthy short film that is The Dream, the new video from Still Corners.  Singer Tessa Murray suits the narratives historical setting.  She nails the camera test convincingly.  There’s a casual nature to her presence that makes you feel like you’re looking into this scene in real time.  The gorgeous settings and parallel costume designs spare no detail.  The Shakespeare inspired concept of “a dream within a dream” is as much baked into the narrative as it is the experience of injesting this complex multi-demensional gem.  (genius!)

Sonically we hear an influence of The War On Drugs with some of the added dream pop appeal known to Beach House.  The video is no happy accident.  A decade in, Still Corners has enjoyed some notable success, enough to lend itself to this level of production.  Their new album Dream Talk drops later this year.  Get hype for the full drop and watch the vid now.

Nettwerk music knows whats good.  The label and mgmt teams is known for grabbing up some of the best in the underground indie scene, so it’s no wonder they’ve caught on to the brilliance that is Bathe Alone.  We’re big fans of multi-instrumenalist Bailey Crone and we’re stoked to see them embracing this new role as leader within a full band arrangement.

You can see that relationship blossom with the release of their new music video Blame Me.  Fun, folly, and angst all have a place in this alt pop almagamation.  The song adds some different flavors to the artists dream pop canon, embracing some of the electro tendencies familiar to Tame Impala or Remi Wolf to alter their shoegaze instincts new.  We can dig it. See for yourself.
