Best New Rock – Rat Palace, Double Happiness, Form Affinity

Grunge and indie pop converge convincingly on Look My Way, the new single from Rat Palace.  Clever syncopated swings and effective drops display an impressive attention to detail on this knock out arrangement.

The inspired lead guitar work with its infectious bends and warped tones are enough to draw us in, but the hook delivers too.  “Are you having any fun.”  Damn right.  The song is a smash that honors the grunge genius of Nirvana and Hole.  We’re big fans.

Double Happiness – Electric Sheep

Double Happiness enjoys triple impact with their eclectic blend. It’s heard on their new single Electric Sheep.  There’s a retro sensibility to this post punk elegance, with catchy melodic instincts lifting them out of genre specific purgatory.

It’s a cool song in any light, while honoring the goth influences known to its upbringing.  We could see this drawing in fans of gothic post punk projects like Drab Majesty as well as more dark wave pop leaning underground updates like Korine.

Form Affinity – Funny Little Man

We dig the creative musings of Form Affinity.  His lofi bedroom aesthetic suits his penchant for imaginative arrangements.  It’s heard in the cheeky post punk brilliance of Funny Little Man.  Both wonderfully produced and lyrically entertaining, Fully Little Man honors the legacy of this styles trailblazers like Joy Division with some added comedic tension.

You can hear similar quips on the emo influenced brilliance of I’m So Ugly and Nice.  It’s even more abstract and unconventional in the vocal delivery but with the music presenting more approachable.  Both tracks peak our interest in a way that makes us wonder where they’ll go from here.  For fans of Alex G and Car Seat Headrest.
