Best New Indie – SAINT KID, Walter the Producer, country girl, Liv Miraldi

Mainstream pop music is arguably better than ever.  Artists like Post Malone, Frank Ocean, and even Taylor Swift challenge the limits of pops intellectual reach.  It’s not just about teens anymore, the new icons of pop seem to captivate every age group.  A few of the artists, like those aforementioned mega stars, are arguably undeniable.

The new school in pop is bound to infect the works of some underground upstarts, and SAINT KID fits the bill.  There’s an influenced sonic sensibility relevant to pop heard on his new single When Are We Gonna Talk About Last Night?  There’s also a melodic influence you might attribute to underground heroes like Bon Iver and JOJI.  We think he’s brilliant.

Walter The Producer hit pay dirt with the release of his new single PAMPLEMOUSSE.  Enjoying some buzz attention that’s offered him some industry leverage, Walter delivers with his most imaginative single yet.

For a blog that’s been watching from the sidelines, this is exactly what we hoped for. There’s an added grit and raw aggression to PAMPLEMOUSSE, and added insanity unheard in the previous works.  He’s always catchy, but the new single grabs you in a way that anthemic.  Stylistically he bridges the realms of Tame Impala and Foster The People with some added dark energy on the new release.

Simply called country girl, their new single tastes like cherry is a melodic smoke show.  The signature hook is simply iconic, recalling late 90s alternative pop anthems with its nostalgic brilliance.  Its the kind of melody that lands oddly familiar but you can’t quite place it, cause it does hit different in a way that’s truly exhilarating.

A rare feel good gem tailor made for a television commercial but destined to attach itself mercilessly to everyone who hears it.

Do not mess with Liv Miraldi or her family.  Mad props for the scathing poetic version of this relatable context.  Her new single Friend of the Family will strike home in the worst way.

“She’s just a friend of family, there’s no need to worry, no nothing’s going on.”

Miraldi is lucid in her difficult recollections as she poetically weaves together this tale of cliche betrayal.  It’s painfully familiar but offered with some melodic scorn that flips this tragedy into a creative triumph.  It’s a clever play too, as it might be her best song, one her betrayers likely won’t be able to enjoy.  Way to earn a diss track.

We think Miraldi has real commercial potential in the vein of Lizzie McAlpine or Holly Humberstone.  Friend of the Family is brilliant.
