Emerging Folk -Cyrena Wages, Joshua Reilly, Teghan Devon, Rubberband Girl

Cyrena Wages stopped us dead in our tracks with her new single Robin Hood.  Her voice is full of vintage twang and captivating vibrato.  The band honors her with a groovy 150 proof Nashville funk.  Or perhaps it’s a blend of her native Carolina and Mississippi delta.  This infectious rhythm is the jive and groove you hoped when you ventured out to the bar on Saturday night, its the swagger that gets those Southern belle dungaree hugging hips to the dance floor.  Her vibe is so authentic you’d swear she’d conjured Leon Russel and Levon Helm, woke them straight out of the grave to bring this groove proper.  Shout out to her band, they bring it righteous.

Now Cyrene herself, she’s a rare sparkle of diamond studded greatness. She’s destined for greatness.  We prefer her in this classic dialect, it’s the energy Nashville needs right now.  She’s the upbeat answer to Musgraves yearbook worthy poetry.  The real life Daisy Jones ready to wake the industry out of its slumber.

Hear Robin Hood now on our Emerging Folk and Alt Country Playlist.

Hauntingly familiar and brilliantly nostalgic, Joshua Reilly gives us a lot of what we love on his new single Every Reason I Run.  Perhaps it’s his admiration of classic dynamic songwriters like Tom Petty and Paul Simon.  When blended with an alt country sensibility that influence reminds us of classic Wilco and Ryan Adams.  If you thought there wasn’t more room to run within this realm, Reilly proves its still aesthetically abundant.  Hear for yourself.

Teghan Devon is intoxicating on her haunting new single Amnesia.  A gorgeous synthesis of a singer songwriter aesthetic and new imaginative movements known to indie folk, Devon fits in well with buzzworthy breakouts Lizzy McAlpine and Phoebe Bridgers.  We also hear an influence of Brandi Carlile in how she raises the melody to her second level in the chorus.  It’s’ that moment that enwraps you in the songs hypnotic affect, helping her to stand out among this suddenly crowded field of indie songwriters.

Amnesia is elegant and ironically memorable, and we’re betting it will be her first breakthrough.  Get in, you’re still early.

Rubberband Girl – Taller

Soundcloud shout out to Rubberband Girl who effectively cites a traditional influence in a way thats invigorating and fresh on their new single Taller.  You can trace this arrangement back to ancient tribal music.  It’s often associated with battle cries and war drums, meant to inspire the people in times of war.  They add an indie folk sensibility, with the creative tension known to Fleet Foxes and a vibrant energy we’d trace back to an influence of 90s alternative.  Dare we say Soundgarden or Blind Melon?  Say it an’t so. Hear the track above!
