Hip Hop Discovery – UglyFace, Jamaal Matters, Earl Hondo, Oh Bummer!

Groove and grime contrast convincingly at the onset of Shoot, the new single from UglyFace.  The beat is laced with dynamic saturation and the vocal that blesses it matches the sentiment.  UglyFace is our kind of urban poet, full of conviction and stylistic pomp.  A mix of jovial and aggressive like a sly jester, one that plots cleverly and gains on your faulty assumptions.

There’s an infectious musicality to their percussive alliterations, it suits this Shakur style narrative.  Like TuPac the artist quarrels with flaws of attraction and abusive alphas.  They use their rap as a chance to publicize a personal pact that they’ll reign street justice if this poetry reemerges as a reality.  The lyrical substance is noble.  The track overall is straight fire.

Jamaal Matters

Hip hop finds its soul groove supreme on the snap and slap swagger of Ships, the new single from Jamaal Matters feat SkyBlew, Donovan Harrell, and Tap.  Incredibly fun with lyrical innovation that adds to the hype and excitement of the moment.  It’s the kind of track meant to pull you out of your winter doldrums and into warmer months, with a fun nostalgic twist affirmed by the 70s throwback album cover.

The call and response smooth suggestive vocal interlaced between verses amplifies the roller derby soul night feel.  A sure thing for fans of Outkast and Anderson Paak.  Get your groove on.

Earl Hondo – The vibe

Earl Hondo spares no expense on the expansive music video for his single the vibe.  From the lighting to the expressive dance features to the kung fu kill bill inspired pivot, Earl Hondo and his student video team absolutely take no prisoners.  A sure thing for fans of J Cole and JID.

Earl Hondo is in fact a vibe.

There’s another level of insanity to Oh Bummer! We’re not mad about it.  The narrative of his new single Stupid might be tailor made for the music video companion.  It might look stupid but it’s a damn good time we’d sign up for in a heartbeat.  The artist and his band of misfits have that kind of communal playfulness that lends itself to the right kind of attention.  Ya know, the one that sells tickets.  It’s catchy and it pays to be fun, let’s all get Stupid.
