Emerging Folk – Bess Atwell, KRISTO, Julia Logan, Alex RV Phillips

We lost ourselves in the intoxicating nature of Bess Atwell.  Her voice is a revelation, full of lush smoky undertones.  It’s the ideal instrument to navigate the lyrical narrative of Fan Favourite, a song full of suggestive innuendo and empowered jest for tempting indiscretion.

The writing is elegant in the spirit of Joni Mitchell while the music embraces an indie sensibility akin to Feist.  Both the melodic movement and the winding wordage sway through this story with candid joy, as if Atwell and the melody find these revelations simultaneously.  We adore Fan Favourite.

KRISTO knows that Morning Blues should blend the realms of melancholy and soul, much like our very real complicated relationship with Sunday morning.  This Morning Blues might be “just another morning,” any morning when the reality of what’s ahead and behind are at a standstill.

Stylistically fair comparisons can be made to Jeff Buckley, and we love how Kristo embraces the modulated electric guitar and voice instrumentation known to Buckley’s iconic Live at Sine.   The Buckley assimilation is more than just a stylistic inference too. KRISTO also comes from a musical family. His Father is renowned Belgian saxophone player Frank Deruytter (Groovemania, Wizards Of Ooze, Bobby Womack ), and his mother teaches the marimba and the vibraphone. A favorable comparison all the same, we could use more of this vibe.

Julia Logan caught out attention with her new single Top of the World.  The aura cites a classic nostalgic feel akin to moodier Fleetwood Mac, while also embracing an iconic indie sensibility familiar to Midlake with the added catchiness of First Aid Kit.  Logan effectively bridges the realms of all three while adding her own trademark touch.  The overall performance adds to the collective brilliance, with both Logan and her band nailing the feeling.

The sonic design delivers too, a testament to the works producer who also lent their talents to the aforementioned First Aid Kit.  Julia Logan is the real deal, you’re still early.

Alex Rv Phillips finds healing in his new song Everything.  The initial atmospheric indie folk aesthetic evolves with groovy delight in the infectious pre chorus, before erupting effectively in the songs hook.

The artist themself flaunts their superpower as a singer, able to shift between somber and outrageous in an instant.  They keep their outbursts under control while injecting some notable rawness to keep it real.  Just how we like it.

Stylistically it’s somewhere between Hozier and Damien Rice, and like both of them it has commercial crossover potential.  It’s a testament to their catchy melodic instincts.
