Emerging Folk – Soft Loft, Michael Benjamin, Annie Bacon & Her Oshen, Little Oil

Entranced by her vibrating trembling vibrato it would be hard to pass by the singer of Soft Loft without turning for a glance of origin.  The project adds to their dynamic with their new indie folk leaning single The Party And The Mess.  The title track of their new album and the final song on the record, the band sets their egos aside to give the singer the limelight all the way up until the songs epic outro.

The lead performance is a landmark career moment, like a musical signature that will follow her through the sands of time.  The narrative and the melody get lost between the quiver of her voice.  It’s a hypnotic affect, much like how what Thom Yorke says gets dismissed by how it makes you feel.  Not that the lyrics of The Party And The Mess aren’t notable, they’re gorgeous.  We just had to give it another listen to zone in on them, because the first time around we were simply lost in her performance.

Michael Benjamin – Happy

Michael Benjamin suggests Happy could feel different with his convincing new single.  It may be ironic or maybe reflect our casual “okay.”  It depends how you step into this array of metaphorical sentiment.  It’s all about perspective, and Benjamin injects some nice upbeat contrast to warp this vibe increasingly joyful with every subsequent listen.

Happy is emotionally layered with a stylistic footing in both commercial and indie realms, much like the work of The Lumineers or The Head and The Heart.

Annie Bacon & her Oshen – Walk A Little Farther

Annie Bacon & her Oshen caught our attention with their new single Walk A Little Farther.  The initially comforting musical melatonin takes on deeper meaning when the voice is introduced into the musical narrative.

Fair comparisons could be made to the gypsy presence of Stevie Nicks, and it’s an exciting assimilation to find new vibes within that aura.  Annie Bacon honors the legacy within her own creative construct, offering this as part of a grief-laden album meant to heal an old soul.  A song to connect to what matters, with the poetic reference to meditative walking at the heart of its story.

We adore the psychedelic folk pop reverence Little Oil injects into their music.  They bolster that classic influence with an indie sensibility akin to Alex G and Elliot Smith on works like I Wanna Know.  There’s also a fair does of eccentric added in.  It creates some tension and contrast in a way that’s refreshing.

I Wanna Know is just one highlight of their new album Twelve Songs.  Other highlights include the upbeat acoustic punk pop of Empty Vacant Pure Divine.  The Mexican born San Francisco based artist blends his influences emphatically, convincingly marrying the legacies of punk, classic rock, and old time country.  Get into all of the album.
