Emerging Folk – Meimuna, Dylan Rockwell, Minna, Lily Kershaw

You don’t have to speak French to know that Meimuna is doing something remarkable with their new single sous la nef. It’s the universal language of music.  It’s the communication of melody, timbre, and talent.  Meimuna has her own blend of all of that, with the track offering cinematic progressive reverence in a way thats more expressive than words could ever tell.

Her soft humble voice recalls the brilliance of Astrid Gilberto, in how her simple charm enhanced the songs essence.  The arrangement matches Jobim’s genius and offers it with a neo indie folk aesthetic familiar to Sufjan or early Fleet Foxes.  Meimuna is a revelation.

Dylan Rockwell has a winner in his new single Something Dumb.  The verse is a solid setup for the songs milestone hook.  The affect is enhanced by the contrast between the two sections, as Rockwell reaches for the highest branches of his falsetto range in the inspired chorus.

It’s super catchy with real radio crossover potential.  The artist embraces Big Thief and Nick Drake as influences.  For us Something Dumb is a song for everyone. It’s freakin’ catchy.

Minna is convincing on her new single In Your Own Way.  Her voice breaks through the emotions that swarm her as she professes this narrative.  An ode to anyone who feels like they didn’t deserve the grace and kindness of another,  In Your Own Way is rare and relatable.

It’s refreshingly honest, and the lyrics suggest it’s more complicated than it seems.  Just like the reality of our emotions and their source, what it means to us and how it appears don’t always make sense.  Minna honors the composition with an inspired performance and an effective arrangement where every contribution leans into the feeling.  Stylistically she bridges the gap between the traditional and the indie folk underground.  Somewhere between Alison Krauss and Gregory Alan Isakov.

Lily Kershaw – Poem Song

We’re hooked on Lily Kershaw.  The indie folk smokeshow has an intoxicating exotic timbre.  Her voice has nostalgic reverence within some modern influence mixed in.  It recalls a blend of Natalie Merchant and Lana Del Rey.  Her new single Poem Song amplifies the comparison.

Paired with a charming music video (see above), Poem Song feels like her signature portrait.  A treasure for her growing fanbase, and a solid introduction if she’s new to you.  Dig into all of her work and find out why she’s already one of our favorite artists of 2024.
