Best New Indie – néomí, Rose Hotel, Joh Chase, Mattycantsleep

Perhaps you’re familiar with our adoration for folk-pop singer songwriter néomí. The dynamic poetic musings of Neomi Speelman are a revelation.  Her voice is intoxicating and her arrangements are consistently impressive.  Her most recent talk shit reiterates her buzz.  It’s insanely catchy and highlights all the best traits of her intoxicating timbre.

The prolific artist is on a roll, dropping one banger after another in a way that defies ability.  It’s a testament to her golden touch and effortless candid talent.  The new single is just one highlight of her new album somebody’s daughter.  The 13 song release features some brand new tracks alongside previously released breakthrough like garden and someone new.  Listen to all of the album and find out why néomí is one of our favorite indie discoveries.  She’s a sure thing for fans of Boy Genius, Holly Humberstone, and Lizzie McAlpine.

Rose Hotel – Fruit Tree

Rose Hotel embraces her love for all things related to David Lynch with an inspired music video for her song Fruit Tree.  The dark melodic essence and glorious contrast the song offers on its own are tribute enough.  In partnership with the video, the work is mesmerizing.

The scenes are full of symbolism and cultish references, and the shots are simply gorgeous.  Songwriter Jordan Reynolds is a star; a complex dark treasure whose medium breaks convention.  This work is a triumph.  Stylistically she’s a sure thing for fans of Weyes Blood, Cate Le Bon, and Perfume Genius.

Joh Chase – To Forget You

Joh Chase is fulfilling prophecies that the conflicting pop rock sound of the 90s will make a comeback.  She’s convincing too, finding new flavor within that vibe and challenging your concept of its quality.  Their new single To Forget You has classic swagger without ever feeling like an imitation.  It’s true to its influences, sounding like it was cut from the era and time capsuled for a 2024 recovery.

The video keeps it fun and plays to misconceptions that the era is fresher and more unassuming than you thought. The 90s were cool in a weird way that got unfairly passed off as cheesy.

Maybe Joh Chase has to be a little off to want to throw back 1996.  Maybe that’s why we love their work. Chase is an understated genius, and we’ve been giving them their due.  To Forget You straight slaps.  Hear for yourself.

Mattycantsleep – FUKD UP.

We were drawn to the infectious pump of FUKD UP.  The under the radar single from Mattycantsleep is crazy catchy.

It blends an influence of the 1975 and Drake elegantly, adding some underground charm to bend the vibe indie.  It’s a testament to the artists emo influences.  Adapted into this alt pop vibe, it’s simply irresistible.  A hidden gem in this world of overstimulation.
