Best New Rock -Sasha Assad, stillyoung, Widows Gold, Josué Kinter

Sasha Assad grabs you attention out the gate on their new single Imagine Mary.  The song starts with an unlikely lyrical image as the singer proclaims “…Think I’m coming down with the flu.”  It immediately inserts a vision that the artist cleverly builds on as the narrative unfolds.  These are complicated revelations, loosely connected and all lending to paint a worldview of intent.

We suspect it’s one of the most dangerous versions of hopeless romantic, that one who partially lives for the suffering regardless of outcome.  It’s as if they’re hoping for the heartbreak so that they can baste in that lament and all the debauchery it justifies.  It’s just a reflection of the convincing vocal performance.  Sasha Assad nails the delivery, and brings the lucid lyricism known to Courtney Barnett or Snail Mail into the indie rock canon.

stillyoung – Freak Like Me

We were impressed by Freak Like Me, the debut single from stillyoung.  The writing is catchy and the production quality is top notch.  The song features a tasty trademark guitar lick and magnetic sycopated rhythms.  They pull you into the moment and sway you to groove, a rare feat in the modern world of indie rock.

The vocal melody is refreshingly addictive, and much like the song it wades between two stylistic worlds.  It suggests an influence of pop while holding on to its underground roots.  That scope of origin also appears reasonably complex.  We hear hints of emo, shoegaze, and dream pop.  For us they bridge the gap between Jimmy Eat World and Day Wave.  Sounds interesting?  It is.

Widows Gold shows that turn of the century indie rock vibes still have some room to run.  Their new single Throw It Away is a convincing throwback.

The singers timbre will win immediate correlations to an intriguing icon.  It’s as if Stevie Nicks sang for an indie rock band.  The band also relates to the influence of Yeah Yeah Yeahs, and you could make that comparison that it’s more like if Karen O sang for The Killers.  Regardless of association you can’t deny that it’s fresh.  We adore it.

Everything is not as it seems on Yr Not Safe, the new single from Josué Kinter.  Initially the song has a sort of a lofi garage aesthetic.  It then erupts into a grunge fueled rock out, a vibe that suits the singers eccentric voice.  It offers some classic punk influence.

We’re talking first wave punk, like The Stooges or Suicide.  Blend that with the catchy appeal of Nirvana and the post punk sheen of Joy Division and the title fits the script.  Who is safe from this?  The clown on the single cover adds to the iteration.  There’s something psychotic about this aura.  Embrace your crazy.
