Best New Indie – Teghan Devon, French Cassettes, Warren Hue, Chinese American Bear

Teghan Devon skips the small talk on her impressive new single how does it feel?  The dialog immediately connects her with her audience.  She speaks to your heart graciously, it offers some refreshing relatability and a chance for some on theme musical escape.  Her performance is both convincing and full of melodic magnetism.

You don’t have to feel melancholy to enjoy this song.  It has that graceful presence of being able to connect itself to a universal trait, an affect that’s enhanced by the songs Beatles style chord progression.  What better way to connect than to cite the band that laid the groundwork for an international language in pop music.  Teghan Devon also connects with vibes familiar to the recent Boy Genius collective.   Enjoy the show.

French Cassettes – When You Know, You Know

There’s no middle ground.  When You Know, You Know.  The title of French Cassettes new single is a catchy existential proclamation.  The video does well to show many versions of his existence.  The music is damn good and we relish in his ability to not take himself too seriously, unless of course he’s deep in art mode.

Beyond its entertaining quip the video sneakily references a scope of influence.  Stylistically he resonates with projects like The Shins in how he adapts an influence of The Beach Boys into the indie canon.  We love it.

Warren Hue – RODEO

Oooh that’s fresh.  We can’t deny the catchy brilliance of RODEO, the new single from Warren Hue. For us this song has it both ways, not unlike the work of Post Malone.  It’s sure to catch a commercial audience but it has some nice underground flavor.

The production layers are rare and his performance is extremely convincing.  The video is simple, but it works and does well to reflect his Indonesian roots.  Everything is not as it seems.  Spark up.

Chinese American Bear – Feeling Fuzzy

Chinese American Bear have an art rock breakthrough with their recent single Feelin’ Fuzzy.  The band does well to incorporate an influence of jazzy rock quirky offshoots like Knower or JD Beck & Domi into a more traditional indie rock canon.  They also adapt an influence of Japanese Psychedelia that lands excitingly fresh.

A killer performance with several trademark melodic moments deserves an accompanying video this good.  Chinese American Bear lives up to their namesake and more.  Hear for yourself.
