Emerging Folk – Josefine Neumann, RHOSEWAY, Ella Stallion, W.Y. Huang

We got lost in the dreamy serenity of Gravity, the new single from Josefine Neumann.  The title track of her expansive new 15 song album is an intoxicating highlight.  A combination of sparkle and chime resonates from her slightly distorted electric guitar.  Toned in this manner, the calculated picking plucks every note to sound like a set of warped broken bells.  The arrangement is gloriously minimalistic, with Neumann’s own soft careful timbre acting as the comforting centerpiece while subtle production layers add harmonious presence.

The lyrics are both poetic and meaningful, as Josefine reasons with her own mishandling.  It’s melancholy with the sense of relief in knowing how you got there.  For us, it’s a reflective song for growth.  We adore it.  Dig into all the album as the newly prolific 16 year old writer is in the midst of asserting her legacy.  For fans of Adrianne Lenker, Lizzie McAlpine, sad songs.

RHOSEWAY captures the aura of discovery on their recent Summer Run.  The chord progression within this rhythmic construct reflects a cinematic theme of exploration.  It mirrors Americana’s connected to the Americana frontier and its bevy of characters.

Cowboys, frontiersmen, and the great unknown all have a stake in the vibe.  RHOSEWAY injects some refreshing indie folk inspiration to update these vibes modern.  Stylistically it connects with the works of Sturgill Simpson, Tyler Childers, and the Highwaymen.

The band erupts out of an atmospheric intro at the onset of Used To Be / Begin, the new single from Ella Stallion.   The indie-pop group formed in 2024 by husband and wife Danny & Joy Davis. The conceptual design of their new release reflects the split title.  The aesthetic swing suits Joy’s emotional affect.  Her voice features a vulnerable twang, one that knows the wear of life.

That subtle grit lends to a believable performance.  Stylistically they bridge the gap between Ani DiFranco and Of Monsters and Men.  They’ve got the ability to breakthrough while retaining an underground sensibility.

A song for anyone ready to make that first step into the light of their new truth, W.Y. Huang lands sincere on his recent Living With Ghosts.  The song is harmonious and beautiful, but it’s the sincere temperament of his performance that really grabbed us.

There’s a candid feel to his delivery despite the music calculated orchestration.  It gives the work vitality and asserts its indie assimilation.  Stylistically it’s a sure thanks for fans of Sufjan Stevens and Elliot Smith.
