Hip Hop Discovery – IAMJALEO, Sparkwoods, Classik x Karmawin, YTC

IAMJALEO is feeling himself on his recent single Ecstasy.  You can have it both ways on this dynamic release.  The chorus is intoxicating while the rap tirade displays a proficient level of skills.  A cascade of alliteration within this kind of familiar conversational narrative mirror rap music’s finest.

That association is amplified in the unexpected indie folk pause, a moment that signifies their diverse scope of inspiration.  In that way Ecstasy connects with the works of Tyler The Creator and Daniel Caesar.

Sparkwoods

Sparkwoods caught our attention with a pair of killer new singles, both from their new album BARLETON TAPEVeryovkina (feat. SK Nine) is an otherworldly rap production.  The vibrant synth heavy sonic design and blend of stylistic aesthetics recalls the creative touch of the most controversial producer in the game, Kanye West.  If you’re looking for a drama free alternative then this one is for you.

We also dig the soulful infectious brilliance of One Time Nine (feat. SK Nine and Markham Knight).  The first lucid verse above the classic soul sample is an effective vibe.  It cites how the classics still have a stake in Black music.

Both singles are a solid introduction to this fantastic record.

Classik x Karmawin – Mad

We’re always down for an old school aggressive rap tirade.  Classik and Karmawin embrace classic nostalgia on their recent Mad.  TuPac and Wu Tang both have a stake in this vibe.  It’s a smart gangsta era jam, courtesy of Classik’s sharp inflected delivery with lyrical flow full of catchy cadence.

That stylistic reference connects this vibe to raps most cherished era.  The beat matches that influence with a lean back sway begging for interpretation.  The duo also connect with artists like Awon and Raz Fresco.

YTC – 2 Piece w biscuits

We recently featured the song POV by Yellow Trash Can in our Best New Indie column.  We gotta admit that one song barely scratches the surface of this projects potential.  They’ve recently released a new album called SOGGY under the acronym YTC, and the entire work is a triumph.  The expansive 16 song release is full of features.  It highlights the multi-instrumentalists that makeup YTC and their ability as genre defying producers.  Highlights include the catchy soulful banger 2 Piece w/biscuits ft Donte Thomas.  We also dig the eccentric fun 21 Savage feel of Not Me feat Bocha and Jitta On The Track.

The rap dominant release also features some psych infused indie pop brilliance, like the song Loveydove.  There’s a bit of T Rex cool adapted with the chill influence of Mac Demarco.  It’s dope.

YTC are a team to watch.  They’ve proven they’ve got prolific ability within an exciting creative construct.
