Best New Indie – Joy Downer, David Henneberg, HanyMust, Gray Hawken

The chorus hits sugary sweet on Patterns, the new single from Joy Downer. The verse works as an effective setup for the hooks infectious drop, one that thrusts you into the groove convincingly.

From the backing vocals to the vibrant tremolo rich production, everything is in its right place on this fantastic single.  Stylistically its an art pop crossover masterclass that should connects with fans of St Vincent and Christine & The Queens.

David Henneberg- Jay Boy

There’s a candid lyrical charm to Jay Boy that might be too honest for some to stomach, but for us its a refreshing alteration to the standard prose within this vibe.  The new single from David Henneberg is all about taking life in stride.  Its about taking the wins as they come and seeing the grace in letting others get theirs.

Its fitting that it sneakily cites surf culture, the closest thing in the US that connects with the European mindset.  While the rest of America fights for internet notoriety, a subset is happy just to wade within the bliss of their own tidal triumph.

HanyMust – Human Behaviour

HanyMust caught our attention with their new single Human Behaviour.  A soothing dose of indie folk collides with an ambient synth aesthetic like musical melatonin.  The chorus seals the deal, with the title serving as the proper payoff statement.

Stylistically they blend the soft attention known to Kings of Convenience with the upbeat indie folk feel known to Jose Gonzalez. We dig it.

Gray Hawken – Golden State

We adore the urban candid poetry that drips from Golden State, the new single from Gray Hawken.  Stylistically we hear a blend of Frank Ocean, James Blake, and Francis and the Lights.

It’s a testament to the eclectic writing style, one that doesn’t deny an influence of pop while retaining an abstract essence.  It also reflects its committment to the recording arts, where sonic quips are as much a part of the writing as the conventional organic tools.  We’re big fans.
