Best New Indie Rock – Quinine, Welcome Strawberry, Hamish Hawk, Ok Cowgirl

It’s been a good decade since we’ve heard about a two song split, so we took extra notice when two acts who we already have on our radar reincarnated a classic tradition.
We adore the sonic fury of Where Are You From, the new single from Quinine.  The angst of the vocal borders on the brink of screaming as vibrant chorus drenced guitars thrash expressively.  We love this post hardcore sound.  Quinine gives a vibe familiar to Title Fight or Balance & Composure an indie rock breakthrough.

Also included on the aforementioned split; Welcome Strawberry are transcendent on The Silent One.  They forgo their dreamy ambient tendencies for a shoegaze alternative freak out.  A Punk or hardcore level dose of energy adapts with harmonious precision.

The songwriting is versatile and dressed differently might recall Smashing Pumpkins or The Replacements.  Wrought in this manner, The Silent One offers something new and exciting to this aesthetic.

Hamish Hawk – Men Like Wire

Hamish Hawk examines the breadth of men he’s known on his new single Men Like Wire.  The poetic lyrics are full of intrigueing memories.  Who he chooses to immortalize in this song and the details he offers are exhilirhating.  How it relates to his own existence, like what has scarred him and what he takes in stride; as an art piece it’s a revelation.  A triumph.

To see your life in this way and to be able to express it in one complete work.  That is the plight of a true artist.  The video amplifies the brevity of this moment.  Stylistically the song leans towards an 80s alternative influence, and it would be fair to cite The Smiths with some added post punk flair.  But Hamish Hawk deserves more than comparisons.  His catalog is righteous.

Ok Cowgirl – Larry David

Ok Cowgirl are going to give you a lot of what you love on their new single Larry David.  We can’t get enough of the singers impressive control over her scratchy raw worn down voice. In that way it connects with recent Philly breakouts Mannequin Pussy.

The band amplifies this moment with an impressive music video.  It’s appropriately cheeky while sneaking in some subtle candid cuts to reference what makes them spark.  It’s community and a tight knit, and it shows in their performance.  Don’t skip the vid.
