Emerging Folk – Tai Shan, Abby Webster, Liza Lo, Jon Tyler Wiley and His Virginia Choir, Choruscape

Tai Shan caught our attention with the retrospective feel of her new single Wheels and Gasoline. The Americana songwriter retains a roots vibe while tagging an influence of dynamic writers like Springsteen and Ryan Adams. In that way we also think she connects with new Americana icon Brandi Carlile.

It’s her second single in advance of her upcoming album, and Wheels and Gasoline is the kind of reclamation that reiterates her prolific nature. Already boasting a deep footprint in the industry, Tai Shan has enjoyed notable features and helmed rich collaborations. A song like Wheels and Gasoline could put her on the map. It’s well earned, she took the long way.

Abby Webster – Entertainers

Montana native Abby Webster has her own perspective on Entertainers. Her lush voice is intoxicating as introspective poetry drips from her mouthpiece. She flips the script on your premonitions when it comes to a life on stage.

Most of us are fans of the craft, but when we flip roles and become a member of the audience it’s a different experience. Within this narrative Webster captures the irony of an artist in the audience both as a community member, and the personal aspect. Her lyrical touch is enhanced by a gorgeous indie folk arrangement. Stylistically she bridges the gap between Sierra Ferrell and Phoebe Bridges. The hype is real.

Liza Lo – Confiarme

We got lost in the soft fury of Confiarme, the new single from Liza Lo. The buzzing songwriter breaks the language barrier with an inspired performance that speaks emotional volumes in way that words never can. If you speak spanish you can get lost in the lyrical poetry, but for the rest of us its a rare hypnotic vibe. It’s dark and cites the metaphysical language of music.

There’s a conjured vulnerability and hurt to her performance; an expression in song. The single is gorgeously produced in a way that illuminates the atmosphere and swirls around the foundation of the singer. Confiarme is simply brilliant. Stylistically it connects classically with artists like Nick Drake and more recently with the work of Damien Rice.

Jon Tyler Wiley and His Virginia Choir – .45

Jon Tyler Wiley and His Virginia Choir embrace the outlaw aesthetic with their new single 45. Singing of the American underbelly and southern counter cowboy culture is an American tradition.

Jon Tyler Wiley offers some additional intrigue in how he bridges the gap between Bob Dylan, Johnny Cash, and modern country. Its a testament to how he tags his phrases, the vitality of the narrative, and the modern production quality. It’s exactly what you would hope for from a country folk submission that cites Sons of Anarchy as an influence.

Choruscape – The Hard Way

Choruscape lands relatable on their new single The Hard Way. The lyrics effectively capture the plight of a young outsider. It’s hard to go unnoticed and The Hard Way is a glorious tribute that feels hopefully in its melodic construct.

A great song gets a haunting illuminated mix warped with sonic brilliance. In that way it recalls the work of Phil Collins or Kate Bush. A vocal performance this convincing deserves such a vibrant mix. Every details sparkles with textured vitality. Little is known about the elusive project, but we’re big fans. Immerse yourself and come out a champion. We’re ready for what’s next.
