Retro Pop Revival – Sleep Kicks, Blastar, Last Wars

Sleep Kicks embrace some rare nostalgia on their new single Evangeline.  The guitar work recalls an influence of The Cult while the vocal performance recalls how David Bowie influenced a style embraced by post punk and new wave.

Evangeline is a proper modern rock song that can’t shake its influences.  Its breathes some fresh life into this realm and proves there’s still room to run left.  We also hear a modern influence familiar to Editors and Kaiser Chiefs.  We can dig it.

Blastar – Ex Machina

Blastar blends multiple aesthetics convincingly on their new single Ex Machina.  Elements of dubstep and modern electronic collide with a classic dance and synthwave ethos on this vibrant release.

It recalls icons like Justice and Daft Punk and how they sneakily cited a retro influence within an undeniably modern vibe.  It’s also a testament to the proficient producer skills of Blastar.  The track is a pseudo instrumental gem, with a tasteful vocal sample to amplify the nostalgia.

Some like it darker.  It’s that stylistic mantra that drew us into the brooding design of Reaction, the new single from Last Wars.  The project interestingly blends an influence of new wave, post punk, and gothic darkwave.  They add some fresh modern inspiration as they adapt that influence modern in the vein of recent sonic movements.

The layers are big and immersive, while the depth mirrors the conceptual brevity of this disdain.  It’s that aforementioned brooding that’s most implicit, feeling like it’s constantly on the verge of a rupture courtesy of the excited hi hat part.  It’s one of their unique features too.  Stylistically they connect with an influence of The Mall, Chrome, and French Police.  Hear for yourself.
