Emerging Folk – Walking Francis, Melanie Maclaren, Dave Devaney, Billy Keane

We were initially drawn into the refreshing nostalgic feel at the onset of Far Away, the new single from Walking Francis.  When the vocal hits the moment adapts intriguingly.  The singer has a rich textured delivery.  It’s instinctually soulful and born out of real trial and tribulation.  The composition offer some nice variation for him to explore his range.

With him as your guide, Far Away is an auditory trip.  The lyrics flow from his lips like a wise friend, offering a relatable reflection.  It’s that relatability that’s comforting, to know that others share in our experience.  It’s a sentiment we need now more than ever.  Stylistically it’s a sure thing for fans of Travis, Ray LaMontagne, James Blunt, and Paolo Nutini.

Melanie MacLaren – Get It Back

Melanie MacLaren might sound like she’s got it all figured out, but her new single Get It Back suggests she’s still working on her finishing move.  Her bright poetic imagery suggests otherwise.  The lucid lyricist seeks the small town sparkle where you see a run down town.  She sees the microcosms overpowered by the magnitude of the big city.

She’s rides in a lane adjacent to paraded songstress Courtney Barnett.  Her lyrics are built less on sarcasm and more on overlooked truths.  It’s the other Dylan, the timeless version. Hear for yourself.

Dave Devaney – Blood

Dave Devaney reveals the rapture with his new single Blood.  The tempered outburst breaks through after the conserved intro.  Devaney doesn’t break character, but the music reveals the rumble basked in this narrative.

Within that fire Devaney shows strength through conviction.  Altogether it’s a brilliant cinematic indie folk gem. Stylistically the vibe recalls the works of Jose Gonzalez and Fleet Foxes.  We can dig it.

Billy Keane – Girl Ain’t Mine

Let’s boogie!  Billy Keane drops an instant classic with his new single Girl Ain’t Mine.  The magic of the traditional Americana canon is in how you make it yours when your inject your spirt into that framework.  A true original will never sound derivative, and Billy Keane fits the bill.  It’s his own blend of life experience mixed with a soup of Americana, Country, Blues, and Southern Spiritual music.

The Girl Ain’t Mine hits all the marks tastefully.  From the sparse call and response to the trademark fills, Keane takes you to the promise land.  There’s some sex appeal too, an affect that harkens to Rock and Rolls first heroes.  Get some.
