Best New Indie – Bec Sykes, We Are The Willows, Francis On My Mind, Belle Shea

We got lost in the dark moody nature of I Know What You Like, the new single from Bec Sykes.  The singer has a robust hypnotic voice.  It’s full of depth with a hazy affect that lands sultry.  She controls it elegantly, tracing the melodic spectrum without ever lifting out of her tempered character.  Her performance is elegantly composed, held together with curious confidence as the dark melodic nature twists the narrative suspiciously.

The brooding piano lifts the cinematic feel and tags its familiarity to classic suspense scores.  Stylistically we hear evidence of Fiona Apple and The Weather Station.  We’re into it.

We Are The Willows – Would You Be Right

We were drawn to the rare orchestral arrangement and cinematic drama offered on the new single from We Are The Willows.  Give all of yourself to the musical moment that is Would You Be Right?  The inspired conjured emotion of the vocal performance says a lot. It’s exhilarating and naturally amplifies the adapted theater, while the drums thrust the composition forward effectively. Not to mention the string arrangement, which is a rare indie music treat.

Stylistically they bridge the gap between Ra Ra Riot and Dirty Projectors.  It’s slightly abstract while leaving some catchy bounty for you to fill up on.  They have it both ways enough to draw in an unfamiliar audience into their more expansive growing catalog.

Francis On My Mind – Hide

We can’t deny the infectious appeal of Hide, the new single from Francis On My Mind.  An energetic indie pop anthem, Hide has anthemic youthfulness.   There’s some nostalgic flavor.  You can hear the ascent from 80s pop up through the modern alt pop evolution we can’t get enough of.

Stylistically it has underground credo while bordering on the commercial appeal familiar to Chappell Roan, Taylor Swift, and Sabrina Carpenter.  Full of stylistic flavor, Francis On My Mind might be the next radio breakthrough. You’re still early.

Belle Shea – Leah

Belle Shea has a smoky intoxicating vocal delivery.  It’s rare in its exotic emotional brilliance.  She bridges the timbre of Natalie Merchant and Lucy Dacus.

She’s an impressive songwriter too.  Her newest Leah channels a relatable modern formality and bottles it into a catchy dynamic musical breakthrough that unfolds like a classic saga about your local scene.  The bare rock arrangement honors the vocal parts calculated conviction, mirroring Dacus’s own Boy Genius in its proficient design. We adore it.
