Best New Rock – Lilly Flower, LIL DUSTY G, URGE, Big Mountain County

Lilly Flower might mask herself as an american sweetheart, but underneath the pretty a dark princess thrives.  The theme of her new single is seeped in convincing contrast.  The gritty fuzzy guitars sound like they’re ripping through sonic fabric, while her sweet voice is oddly mischievous.

Baked into the noise of the music, Flower embraces an influence of shoegaze while seething beneath like a warped pop princess.  We can dig it.

LIL DUSTY G finds innovation in fuzz on his brilliant new single JUMPLY, THE BIRD OF PREY.  The riffage is legit, while the untamed drum part ties this influence to icon Jimi Hendrix.

Thankfully it’s not in an over-embellished guitar hero kind of way, but more so in Jimi’s underrated songwriting style.  We don’t get to cite the influence often, so you should heed our advice and jump into the music video above.  It honors the innovative mantra while carving out its own space within this vibe.  Even more, the notable Marshmallo is a key collaborator on the project.

It’s no secret we desire abstract dark melodies.  French gothic post punk band URGE delivers the goods with their new single Desolated Auguries.  It’s reasonably weird while cleverly teasing catchy melodic moments .

Stylistically we hear an honorable influence of Joy Division, while the singer also occasionally emulates an affect similar to Morrisey.  They thrust that inspiration into darker, more obscure realms.  We’re thankful for it.  The band includes members from M83, Bruit, Plebeian Grandstand, and Rallye.  It’s like an underground super group.  Right on.

The kids are not alright.  Big Mountain County start a riot in the video for their new song Going Down.  This in concert freak out circle of debauchery looks like great fun.  If this is an advertisement to see the band live then they have absolutely succeeded.

We wish concerts would be held in this manner but without a stage between yourself and the audience bad things might happen.  Big Mountain County seem like they’re all for it.  For fans of Mars Volta and IDLES.  Get into it.
