Best New Indie – catfish jr, Mila Degray, Carla Aakre, dearest

The party gets an energetic lift on how it is again, the catchy new single from catfish jr.  Roots Rock Americana intersects with indie garage pop on this inspired single.  The performance is convincing and feels guaranteed to wake a swaying crowd.

The stomp and holla pump suits the singers soapbox presence.  His performance is full of refreshing conviction and vitality.  He’s got the instinctual chops to make any rock song radio worthy, but what makes him magnetic is the feeling he brings to this performance.  Full of angst and fury, he makes this classic guitar arrangement feel cool again.

Mila Degray is unassuming on her invigorating new single Two Bridges.  There’s some brilliant contrast here.  It’s hears in how she balances erotic under layers with her girl next door persona.  Good girls do bad things within this suggestive narrative.

The sonic design helps to build the tension of this moment.   It’s suspenseful, twisting towards melodically dark inclinations.  They brazingly compete for dominance over her glittery facade.  We like it both ways.  In that way she connects with artists like Ethel Cain.  We’re big fans.

Carla Aakre paints her masterpiece with her new single watercolour.  This vibe is tailor made to jump kick an introspective weekend escape.  It’s about the journey, not the destination. It’s felt in the surefire beat that chugs beneath her playful musings.  “Did you come here for the light, to ease you after a long night.”

This is how we imagine Nico might sound if she fronted The War On Drugs.  Carla herself is an intoxicating presence.  There’s mystery to her vibe.  It’s a faceless seduction, one where you get to carve out the details and find some unrequited vision of free love. The paint runs wild on this immersive folk pop gem.

Sometimes you feel a little of Everything.  That’s how we feel about the new single from dearest.  It’s both somber and triumphant.  The sentiment is baked into the songs magnetic hook.

Coming out of a dreamy indie folk intro, the trademark statement is amplified by the introduction of a subtle yet infectious drum part.  The singers measured quiver injects an emotional brilliance without overindulging in the academic.  This is all about a vibe, and we’re here for it.  Everything is a sure thing for fans of Clairo and Feist.
