Best New Indie – Maise May, Deion Gill, Monotronic, St Lucia

We’re big fans of Maise May.  Her abstract sonic nature and graceful instincts make for elegant contrast.  Everything she touches is steeped in it.  Her new single Trust Your Gut advances that legacy.

It’s a pretty song at its bare minimum.  Produced in this manner, it’s a sonic odyssey.  Take a little trip with her.  Maise May hangs with the best in modern production.  A sure thing for fans of Clairo, Bon Iver, and The Japanese House.

Catchy instincts collide with artist Deion Gill’s fresh nature on his new single conditional.  The vibe is absolutely infectious.

The inspired beat gets warped all ways by the singers interesting vocal style.  He blends his influences impressively.  It’s as if Bruno Mars was raised on alternative rock and Linkin Park.  In that way it connects with projects like Teevo Touchdown.  Deion Gill is one artist who the indie rock fans and pop fans can both agree on.  We’re big fans.

Monotronic finds the middle ground between pop and indie rock on their convincing new single Looking Away.  The song is remarkably catchy, with some refreshing melodic surprise in how they pivots between sections.  Stylistically we hear the influence of The Killers and Phoenix in a way thats honorable, but not derivative.

You can also hear some classic rock tendencies.  We’re not mad about it.  Collectively it’s an influence that’s been recently buried by new indie movements. The music video is cool too (see above).  Hear for yourself.

There’s rare hope at the core of Fear of Falling, the new single from St Lucia.  It built into the melodic construct.  A sense of wonder that inspires you to take the changes head on.  It’s the ideal song to start your day.  We can use a little mood uptick every once in a while.

Stylistically it blends the indie feel of My Morning Jacket with the classic legacies of Fleetwood Mac and dare we say Abba.  Like them, Fear of Falling has crossover appeal.  The kind of feel good vibe that even the tough kids can get into.  An interpretive dance is in order.
