Best New Indie – Widows Gold, Mak Ro, Magnets, Maria Rosenberg

Widows Gold blew us away with their new single Another You.  There’s a yearning to this affect.  Whether it yearns for affection or truth; it yearns deeply.  Gorgeously produced, the arrangement reimagines how rock guitar fits into an indie folk framework.  Despite the lack of drums the music entices you to sway in tandem with its progressive lives.

The minimalistic design helps to highlight the singer.  Her performance is full of conviction. It’s a believable fury.  “There can never be another you.”  Stylistically we their indie rock instincts clashing with an influence of Fleetwood Mac, Radiohead, and the Beatles.  We adore it.

Mak Ro is on to something special. The Filipino American duo blends their influences elegantly.  In their sound we hear a touch of alternative R&B, indie pop, and dance pop.  Each song is spiced with varying blends of the three.   Their lead singer is blessed with an impressive vocal ability. Their chops are strong enough for the commercial R&B canon, but that framework is just too limited for their creative prowess.  In that way songs like Bones and Cold might draw comparisons to creative giant Frank Ocean.  We also hear an influence of Stevie Wonder, Francis and The Lights and Billie Eilish in the imaginative production and sparse arrangements.

They also have a cinematic orchestral side, a facet beautifully displayed on their single Nocturne.  These are just three distinct flavors from their new album Love In The Dark.  It’s a creative masterpiece that should delight fans of the aforementioned Frank Ocean and Stevie Wonder.  Dig in.

There’s a dreamy intoxicating trait to Sway.  We find it mesmerizing.  The new single from Magnets is hypnotic in an obscure way.  The melody intriguingly pulls between different moods.  Within its own bars it both dark and hopeful.  It’s an informed beauty, one that fights to find grace in a dark world.

The affect is inspiring and honored by the singers smooth delivery.  Her style reflects her influences, an eclectic amalgamation of Enya and Grunge.  The rhythm part has some nice groove too.  It injects a rock and roll authenticity into the indie pop aura. We’re big fans.

Maria Rosenberg is full of sultry mystery on her new single In The Pit.  Her timbre embraces a gypsy aura.  It suits the songs classic psych rock feel.  It’s a brooding groove with exotic melodic flavors.  The vibe suits her voices rare presence.  Stylistically she blends the aesthetics of Jefferson Airplane, Lana Del Rey, and Florence Welsh.

The videos a vibe too. Maria has real star power. The video imagines her like a diamond in the rough, an urban princess. She’s playful and slightly out of place within this outdated concrete playground. In that way she finds contrast familiar to Kacey Musgraves. We can dig it.
