Emerging Folk – Meimuna, Kate Short, GOODTIME, Guinevere

The beautiful serene sounds of Meimuna are undeniable.  The Swiss indie folk export can do no wrong. Their recent album c’est demain que je meurs is a triumph.  It’s dreamy and ethereal at its essence.  The arrangements are simple and devoted to the foundation of the artists voice and candid guitar work.  The performances feel natural and in the moment.  Its a breath of fresh air, and the kind of work that should be performed in a theater.

Stand outs include the serene lullaby for a satellite, a piece in which the singer sounds angelic.  We were equally entranced by pres du littoral.  She breaks the language barrier, in this moment choosing French as her focal dialect.  It adds to the songs exotic brilliance, one where the musical movement feel as curious as the words you can’t translate.  It’s an exclusive beauty, one your ears where gaze upon blissfully.

We got lost in the intoxicating aura of City Chasms, the new single from Kate Short.  The textured untamed guitar always feels like it’s running away, as Short tries to reel it in with an inspired vocal performance.  The affect resonates with the lyrics, as the narrator recounts how it could have been excellent if it didn’t get messed up like a rom com cliche.

It’s a relatable sentiment, the reality that young loves likely to self sabotage.  The flaws of our human condition are immortalized in a glorious heartbreak song.  Stylistically it’s a sure thing for fans of Lizzie McAlpine and Clairo.  We love it.

GOODTIME channels their influences on their convincing new single Damsel Eyes.  Stylistically they bridge the gap between Nick Drake and the Laurel Canyon legacy.

It’s a curious nostalgia, one that doesn’t target one locale specifically while effectively triggering familiarity.  In that way it presents as something new, a revelation that arises in celebratory fashion courtesy of the songs late jam breakout.  An effective arrangement features tempered horns and a thoughtful lead guitar.  Most notably, it’s the graceful acoustic guitar playing that drew us in.  We dig it.

Generational Fear.  It’s a daunting tradition to tackle in song.  Italian songwriter Guinevere presents it elegantly on her new single.  She conjures the experience with theatrical drama, amplified by progressive swings and an effective vocal performance.

Stylistically we hear an influence of Fiona Apple and Bjork with an added experimental folk pop edge.  The blend is exciting and rises to a fever in the songs late call and response breakthrough.  In those moments you feel all the angst and fear known to generational fear.  Break the cycle.
