Hip Hop Discovery – Ki!, Al-J, werdperfect, Pink Jagg

Damn that’s fresh.  That was our instant reaction to Non Stop Action, the new single from producer Ki!.  Featuring the infectious rap stylings of Al Agami, everything is in its right place on this fantastic lofi boom bap blend.

We love how they inject a vintage soul influence into the turntable style beat.  The rappers percussive musicality uses cadence like a samurai sword.  It’s an epic release, with the kind of catchy crossover appeal that will make non rap fans fresh believers.  Hear for yourself.

Al-J recently dropped his anthem Put In Work.  The single also features kane major and DJ Cheese. The verse is like the underground icons memoir and we’re all here for it.  We’re suckers for a career biopic and Put In Work is the perfect slogan to reflect the rappers career.

The Connecticut native got his start rhyming in the lunchroom cafeteria and rolling with a Bridgeport-based chapter of the Zulu Nation. Aspiring to the likes of rap icons the Juice Crew, A Tribe Called Quest and Leaders of the New School. One Half of Black Madeen, AL-J has collabed with notables like Cormega, Reef The Lost Cauze, Tragedy Khadafi, Gift of Gab (Blackalicious), Planet Asia, Divine Styler, Blacastan, Sadat X, The Jacka (RIP), Akil The MC (Jurassic 5), Edo.G, Kam, Ill Conscious, Daddy Grace, Slaine, Rite Hook, Sicknature (Snowgoons), and more.  He’s legit.

The opening skit of Sunday Spinouts cites drug culture like Wu Tang cites classic kung fu cinema.  The aesthetic works when it comes to werdperfect, but this an’t no hippie rap bullshit.  The Cleveland rapper is a poetic savage, with dense expressive unique lyrical imagery.

Smooth like BIG and in tandem with his immersed upbringing, werdperfect embraces cadent musicality in hip hop.  It’s won him opening gigs for notables like Aesop Rock and MF DOOM.  It’s cause he’s brilliant.  The new single just reiterates it.

We dig the fresh stylistic swagger of Charlie’s Angels, the new single from Pink Jagg.  The underrated wordsmith retains his candid slow draw convincingly.  It’s an effortless affect.  It’s familiar to mainstream rap, but Pink Jag offers some proper lyricism that connects with both the underground and the mainstream.

The beat is dope too, with a groovy drum rhythm and late trumpet swells that cite an eclectic range of influences.
