Best New Indie – Sorvina x Zawadi Yamangu, BABET, Mauger, Carla Aakre, 22° Halo

We dig the cinematic brilliance of I Belong to You.  The song is going to be included in the soundtrack for the radio drama Girl, Woman, other.  The collaboration blends various aesthetics convincingly.  It combines vintage soul with an influence of Radiohead and the Jack White indie blues rock canon.

It’s a dynamic progressive release, with alternating sections that compliment each other.  Expect great things when you combine Sorvina, Zawadi Yamungu, and Sebastian M.Purfürst. The vocal performances are top notch. They definitely have our attention!

BABET embraces the vibe on their appropriately titled greenblueviolet.  The beats vintage swagger pulls you in, and what’s inside is worth the magnetism.  The vocal performance is simply infectious.

As a singer BABET is intoxicating while retaining an urban sensibility.  Stylistically she finds the middle ground between the mainstream and the underground.  Like a Kate Bush and Billie Eilish hybrid raised on Polica and Charlotte Day Wilson.  We’re so into it.

MAUGER steps out of their comfort zone and hits pay dirt.  Their new single Easy Now features a charming duet with the lead singers daughter.  The chill psych folk pop artist honors his daughters inclusion by dropping his best song ever.  The musical conversation between the duet is perfect.

Stylistically it’s a sure thing for fans of Andrew Bird or Peter Bjorn and John.  We find it irresistable.  Their voices compliment each other so well.  And the video is damn cute.  This is love.

Carla Aakre finds a feeling that words can’t describe on her recent through.  She immortalizes it in the aura of the song.  A mind altering moody highlight, through has a way of tying itself to a moment.  Aakre’s abstract lyricism adds to the sentiment.  Snapshots of experience escape her lush vocal delivery.

The vibe is somewhere between sorrow and awe.  It’s not all melancholy.  There’s a strength to this discovery.  A deep appreciation for romance and an understanding of helpless self destruction.  Stylistically we think it’s a sure thing for fans of Sharon Van Etten, Feist, and The War On Drugs.

Philadelphia songwriter and producer 22° Halo caught our attention with their new release Cobwebs.  The artist is staying true to their underground aesthetic while rising to the surface courtesy of their innately catchy instincts.

Cobwebs truly entraps you in its harmonic sparkle.  With their vocal performance it’s clear their not about trying too hard, but it works.  It’s a new realm in psych folk pop, one that understands the legacy of Velvet Underground or Television but also has an affinity for modern acts like Real Estate or Alex G.  We’re into all of it.  We’re into this.
